    Loadmaster tweaks

One of the best tricks is to use a die over the primer seateing position to center the brass. In my 40 and 357 sig setup I use a 40 sizing die with the decapper pin removed or place my 357 sig sizer die in that position to set the shoulder after decapping with a 40 die in the first position. In...

    Magnum primers with Longshot

I have experimented with magnum primers a good bit with several powders in 9mm and 40SW. What I have found is that my ES and SD are smaller with magnum primers but nothing else really changes. I primarily use Power Pistol and Longshot powder, but have found the same to be true with WAP and IMR...

    economy rifle

My experience with the marlin is limited but for $750 total setup the Stevens 200 or a Savage model 11, topped with the Redfield revolution (built by leopould) would be a hard to beat. All of the Savage rifles are accurate and function well except for the Axis' magazines. From my experience the...

How fast do you need to shoot a bolt action rifle to overheat?

I own the same model Savage you mentioned, even at the target range firing a 5 shot group every 5-10 minutes for an hour the accuracy is very good. The only shots I ever really notice as different are the first couple after a good scrubbing. Realisticly i believe you would have to be purposely...

Mossberg 500 - Problem or not.....

Had the exact same issue with my 20 gauge. A good check of the actionbars and their track in the receiver will probably show an exceptionally tight fit. My solution was to "gently" file away the casting marks on the action bars. The casting marks were on the top and bottom of both action bars...

Need help with Ithaca model 51

The gun show idea starting to creep up the list of "next steps to take". I will definitely repair the action bar first though. I am going to invest in exactly one box of better ammo and give it a chance. Then bye-bye if it doesn't perform.

    Accurizing rifles

Quote "Glassing is actually pretty easy, again patience and time lol. It also often the last piece of the puzzle for making an accurate rifle, boring.....boring is good There are alot of warnings about gluing your action to your gun and they tend to scare folk. The truth of the mater is that if...

Need help with Ithaca model 51

Thanks oletymer, that plate has broken twice now in different spots. I know a weler who is awesome with a TIG and can fix it but I figure it will break again. I like the iea of having a higher quality one machined. But still at a loss about the feed issue. I am curious as too whether a different...

Need help with Ithaca model 51

Yes, the gun will chamber and fire if you pull charging handle. The latest fracture was discovered after a session of shooting. The gun reloads sometimes and sometimes doesn't. All of the other parts seem to be ok when examined. I'm stumped.

    Red dot for Mossy 500...?

Put ghost rings on my mossy 5oo and an ATI stock with pistol grip. It handles great and the ghost rings help accuracy without slowing down targget aquisition. Best of all total price of upgrades about $50.

    7.62 NATO/.308 "margin of error"

As helotaxi said above it all depends. The variable are such a wide spread it is almost impossible to give definite answers. The main principle is bullet speed along with hole size and location all combine to determine outcome. Also there is some variance from one persons anatomy to another. A...

    7.62 NATO/.308 "margin of error"

The lung tissue will not stretch and is very fragile. However, the effect of a temporary cavity will be partly mitigated due to hollowness "air passages" within the lung. It is not a very dense organ. The tissue within that is actually torn will be severely damaged but the area will be a smaller...

    7.62 NATO/.308 "margin of error"

As a person who has treated many gunshots over the past 14 years I can tell you it is not a simple question to answer. An individual hit in the heart will almost immediately lose blood pressure and consciousness with death very close behind. A lung shot will immediately drop respiratory capacity...

    reduce recoil of 270

I shoot both the 243 and 270 in bolt guns and really like each. If you cant get the 270 comfortable for you the 243 would be much gentler, I believe they are rated about 11 lbs of recoil force verses 19 lbs. Both will do the job on deer size game. Best of luck in your search. BTW trajectories at...

Any experience with H&R in 35Whelen

Thanks for the info guys. I will be keeping my eyes peeled for a different Savage to rebarrel while I save for the H&R and see which happens first. I decided I don't want to mess up my model 116 06, but if I come across a different Savage at a good price then we'll see.

What are some good .22 pistols for $300

Wish I had kept either one of the Ruger Single Six revolvers thats passed through here but oh well. Most Recently had a Beretta Neos with 6" barrel. It was really nice shooting piece but never got got the "This thing is great" feeling from it. The Ruger with 22lr and 22mag cylinder though, They...

Any experience with H&R in 35Whelen

Have been wanting a medium bore rifle for a while. Don't really have a specific need in mind just want something a little different. I have been considering rebarreling a Savage 30-06 to 35 Whelen but have found I can purchase the H&R for about $70 bucks more and keep my 30-06. I would like to...

    On Fighting Shotguns....

In response to lefteyedoms post about the Mossberg. My only current shotgun is a youth model 500c in 20ga. I replaced the original stock with one that has a pistol grip, it has a 20" barrel standard. I use this for everything, skeet, rodents, deer "at times" and keep #3 buck in it beside the...

Savage Axis needs a strong hold

MY JB fix worked well for me. The inside of the forearm is basically hollow. I cut some pieces of aluminum stock to fit the length of each section and used the JB as glue basically. While the JB was setting I put the action and barrel back in stock and used toothpicks to set the stock to barrel...
