What is acceptable accuracy in a 9mm?

Hi all, I have a question about what you consider "acceptable" accuracy in 9mm pistols. Without naming names, I have a couple (major brands, no sub-compacts like an LC9 or Keltec), and I do wonder, how well am I doing, and how well do the guns shoot? So for your "typical" self defense...

BLR magazines: caliber specific for a reason?

I too doubt they are different, but it makes it easier for people to order if they see their specific caliber.

For a hunting rifle what would be your choice of only one hunting rifle?

Depends a bit on the mission, but here in the upper midwest, I would go with a short action in 243 or 308. Easier to shoot, accurate, plentiful ammo and reloading components. Of course the largest thing I am likely to want to kill with it would be whitetail deer. Longest target range (paper)...

Ohio to propose new changes for deer

A few years ago, Wisconsin changed their rules to allow rifle cartridges in a lot more of the state. It was only the Northern third or so for a long time. I would be very interested to know if the change back to a more permissive cartridge selection has led to more accidents and dangerous...

Best bolt action rifle under $650

Depends on local prices. Around here, you are not likely to get a CZ for less than $650 in any non-rimfire model (same seems to be going for Ruger, Remington, and Browning). So look very hard at Savage and Tikka, probably in that order. Things will depend on fit and caliber, and of course the...

scope advice - 223 - Target Work Mostly

It depends on how you plan to shoot it. In my case, I have a 527 Varmint in 223, and put a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10x on it with a large objective because my mission is mostly like yours, with informal target shooting being the primary mission. I wanted clear glass with low eye fatigue and a 1"...

I think Dick's is sliding backwards again

Gave up on them a long time ago. First they got rid of handguns, then their long gun selection became lame, then their ammo selection became lame. Kind of a trend that made the list plain... lame.

Why Doesn't Anybody Make Their Own Magazines?

Great thread, interesting topic. I especially like the DIY example, although obviously that person has more than a little skill and expertise in metal part fabrication. I've wondered the same thing. Back around 1999-2002, a buddy and me theorized that a lot of AR and AK mags were made on...

    .243 Axis

Several years ago I bought a Savage .243; it was one of those "package" guns that came with a scope, but no Accutrigger. Very, very similar to what is now the Axis line. It shot great, I was stunned with accuracy with both factory ammo and my 95 gr Noslers and Varget. After a couple of years...

    The .22 Long Rifle

I would think sales have slowed. None of my friends are interested in because ammo is hard to find, and we are all basically reloaders of one kind or another. So for the last year, and well into this one, we are concentrating on our centerfires. Even though the reloaded centerfire isn't less...

    Do you reload?

I think the topic draws reloaders, so you have some response bias in the survey. However, there has been some pretty massive growth in reloading over the past 4-5 years. I started sometime around 2000 or so, and never looked back for center fire (other than 9mm). At the time, I was kind of...

Help - 9mm Lee Seating Die going badly

Admittedly, I don't reload 9mm or for any semi autos but do load for some revolvers and rifles (all lever or bolt guns). Are you saying you don't crimp at all on 9mm? I thought all semi-autos needed to be crimped to keep OAL when they are slammed into the chamber. Is this not true?

    Found some Varget today!

Going rate around here is usually $25 plus or minus a little. There is one local big box retailer notorious for high prices that is $5-10 more than that. Never seen it as high as $40 at a store (don't do the gun show thing, no idea there).

Help - 9mm Lee Seating Die going badly

That sounds like the plug is there, but the problem you describe sounds like it's not. Normally I run the plug for seating all the way out to get the die set to crimp. Once I'm happy with a firm (but not so strong as to damage the brass) crimp, I start to walk the seater plug in slowly. There...

    38 brass

Well, for me it's usually "best bid" brand which is usually Winchester around here. However, for pistols, my application is short range practice, target, and some cowboy action, none of which really benefit a lot from the more premium products (I do spend the money on components for rifle...

    reviews on Reloader-15

For the family 243's, we have had great success in Varget (95 gr Noslers in the Winny), IMR 4350 (87 grain explodobullets for fun), and Reloader 19 (heavier 100 grain bullets for whitetail). The 308 is particularly fond of 4064, but am trying some others for fun. No experience with 22-250.

    Rossi Leverguns? Personal experience?

Owned two, still have one. Frequently they need an action job and to have the ejector spring lightened up to make them cycle consistently. Also consider the spring on the loading gate of all things. One was the "old style" flat brown stained stock, the other is a new "Hartford Arms" (also...

    Do you reload?

Yes, the only centerfire I don't reload is 9mm and 12 gauge smokeless. All others are my own, and several rifles have never fired a factory made round.

    Ruger 10/22?

Same here. CZ 452 Lux (old model) and I never looked back. Nothing bad to say about the 10/22 but everyone that handles the CZ likes it a lot. :) Otherwise, nothing wrong with the others. Marlin, Mossberg, Remington, Savage, all make very good, very accurate 22 rifles that are a blast to...

    Your CCW Class Experiences

Minnesota here. Classes in this state are really a law class and a proficiency (safety really) shooting test. Quality varies widely between instructors, but as a whole is pretty good. Always look for references if you can for an instructor. My wife has taken two, I took one. She said her...
