.22 Long Rifle Match? For a cartridge dating back to 1887, rim-fire priming, a hollow-based, heeled, nearly pure lead bullet, with heavy crimp & outside lube..it does pretty good!
Hello, walkalong. Before trying the steel wool..either use an older (copper..not zink) penny or a thin copper scraper..flood surface with thin oil or Hoppe's #9 & gently scrape surface..won't remove any pits, but won't remove bluing either.
Most 12GA. shell boxes are printed..3 Dram Equlivant..this means the smokeless powder charge, even though of much lighter weight gives the equal velocity to shot charge as the old 3 Drams of black powder...And from what I have heard..the old timers agree the black powder loaded shells kicked...
Hello, I have seen Pre WW1 photo's of the young Russian prince Alexi holding his minature Mosin Nagant rifle. I can't seem to find any information on this..probably a "Tool-Room" custom build. Wonder what caliber .22 rimfire? Any info would be appreciated!
With seater stem backed out, I like to adjust seating die with a case in shellholder and ram all the way up. Threading die down until I can feel crimp ring contact case mouth..then back off die couple of turns. Since I use seperate crimp die, I don't have to change setting.
1+ what dfariswheel said. Stainless steel, while very tough..is a "gummy" metal..never will get the glass-hard surface of a case-hardned steel..or the silky smooth/glass rod breaking feel of a classic S&W.
Interesting interest in top breaks. So here is an idea..what about a modernized Webly-Fosbery..stainless and/or titanium. 9mm, 357 Sig..on up..maybe even a .22 rimfire for grins!
It's probably the heaver load. Years ago I was shooting a 1980's era Colt re-make 1860 army .44 percussion revolver, using round ball..every powder charge I tried had it shooting way high and to the left..finally got discusted and stopped shooting it.. found a Lyman 450229 hollow-base mould...
Hello, Very interesting..and thought provoking posts! I guess in my case, I really taught myself how to reload in my very early teens, even before owning a centerfire firearm! My sister would check out from downtown library Phill Sharpes Complete Guide To Handloading..I just about wore that...
Hello, BlackNet. I have just gotten back into black powder shooting. I used Black solve & Birchwood Casey solvent then..as welll as hot soapy water. Took out a little Ballard in .25-25 Stevens..dreaded the thought of clean-up in that small bore..First time with Butch's Black Powder solvent..3...
I have a Ruger 6" nickled single six with dual cyl. Had this about 30 years..and never fired a mag. thru it. Last year installed mag. cyl. & bought CCI hollow points thinking I would try..never got around to it. Few nights ago, 4:00 A.M...waiting for cat to come back inside from doing it's...
When I was 15, I taught myself how to run ball for my Navy Arms 1851 Colt navy .36 percussion revolver. On an old cast-iron wood burning range in barn, little 10# pot, old bent spoon. and Lyman dbl. cavity 375 round ball mould. Fast forward 44 years..and over 100 moulds later..load cast in...
don't get too comfortable..I can remember back in the 70's you had to sign for purchase of black powder..which is still considered as an explosive by the ATF..as of now..up to 50# is exempt..but that would be easy enough to change!
Hello, Infamous. You shouldn't be getting leading like that..I shoot soft cast plain-based bullets in black powder .40-70 Sharps and Remingtons with no leading. Take a look inside bore with good light. Are there tool marks going across lands and grooves? These can act like a file. Might try...
zxcvbob has it right..it's nothing new..Dupont introduced the so called "Tin Can" powders desiginated by 1/2..15 1/2..17 1/2..this one was later replaced by IMR3031. Tin was incorporated in an effort to reduce the severe cupro-nickle fouling in the 30-06 following the first world war.
Hello, jmace57. The other smaller mould alongside the hollow point 429421, is also a design by Elmer Keith..the 358431 hollow base. This was a 160gr. bullet as opposed to the original solid base of 170grs. Keith was after higher velocity in the then new .357 magnum with the lighter bullet...
Years ago, I was just married and funds were in short supply..had a Snider artilery and 3band. The artilery had a 5 groove bore, the 3 bander 3 tapered grooves like the pattern 53 muzzleloader. I made chamber casts of each. Since I had no loading dies, I turned cases from solid brass stock...
post #55 implied that the Winchester 1873 was not a rimfire..The winchester 73' was that companies first rifle chambered in .22 short and long..( the long-rifle didn't make it's debut until 1887). and I believe the first repeating American .22 rifle.
Other classics are Ballard No. 3, Colt...
