What is the nicest gun you were ever given as a gift?

The "nicest" gun I ever received was a Winchester Model 67 single-shot .22rf, bolt-action rifle I received on Christmas of 1957 from my parents when I was 14 years old; the nicest because it was the first gun I ever owned and nothing has ever given me more joy from under the tree than that shiny...

    Question for SUB 2000 shooters

Probably a good idea but I bought the gun because it was cheap and unencumbered by stuff that adds weight and detracts from the fast handling, "streamlined" configuration. I'll probably stick with what made me an interested buyer in the first place.

    .257 Vanguard

Ten years ago,I bought a new Weatherby Vanguard rifle chambered in .257 Weatherby Magnum from Fin Feather Fur Outfitters in Ashland, Ohio for $299.99. Like too many things, I bought the rifle simply because it was a good price but something I had no earthly use for. A friend of mine bought one...

Mark II - What Is It Worth?

With few exceptions, Ruger .22 autos, like most firearms, will never reach "collector" status in terms of monetary worth. And, no matter how little effect the tarnished finish might have on how well the pistol shoots, it certainly detracts from whatever value a pistol with a nice, original...

J frame goodness VS K frame shooting

In my experience, there's never been a J-frame that comes even close to a typical K-frame when it comes to how good the da trigger pull is (and I have owned more than a couple J-frames [still do] and like them a lot; mostly for their configuration, not for their trigger pulls).

For the past week, what was it?

If I'm carrying one of several different autos that are in my edc inventory, including ones chambered in .380 ACP, 9mm Luger and .45 ACP, in the interest of extreme reliability and adequate penetration, they are usually loaded with hardball, conceding all of its offsetting disadvantages. For me...

My first lever action rifle - 30-30

I find that's true when peeling an orange and even that's easy when compared to reassembling something like an automatic fly reel. How did they ever stuff twenty feet of spring into the inside of a fly reel? Some things are just made to stay dirty.

    Question for SUB 2000 shooters

The Smith & Wesson Model M&P FPC as reviewed by the American Rifleman (October 2023 issue) does seem to be a reasonable alternative to the Kel-Tec 2000, as it allows the rifle to fold using almost any rear sight without compromising its compact, folded configuration (though it does weigh a pound...

    Question for SUB 2000 shooters

And what makes the "scrunch" even more uncomfortable is the locking latch base at the end of the stock digging into your cheek, especially during recoil. If the "fix" for this is adding a bulky optic to a rifle I bought chiefly for its streamlined compactness, I quickly lose interest. I am...

    Question for SUB 2000 shooters

Yep-and the bigger the scope, the worse the look. I won't dispute the obvious advantages glass has on most any rifle but, in addition to appearance, a scope on a carbine like the Model 94 pretty much obviates one of the best reasons for having it-fast handling in heavy cover.

    Dang. I'm Depressed

Oscar Wilde's advice in how to overcome a temptation is to yield to it. I fear I've followed his wise advice way too many times over the course of eight decades. 😈

Hoard of old Gunmags (the reading kind)

I have an attic full of old gun magazines and still subscribe to several. When I was growing up, magazines dedicated to information about firearms were few and far between and I relished reading all them (whenever I could afford to buy an issue). The American Rifleman, Shooting Times, Guns and...

    Revolvers, Retirement, Freedom...

I retired in 1998, never looked back. Speaking for myself, retirement is everything I dreamed it would be. "Free, free, free at last"! I was made for retirement. I fired my first shot on the day I shed the yoke-hit the alarm clock square in the face. If I could have, I would have retired at age...

Looking for new info. K-frame cracking?

I probably paid more than I should have for mine (used, of course) and I examined it very carefully for any evidence of cracks before purchase. I tote mine (a round butt version) fairly regularly in an iwb holster.

    Hawes Western Marshal Revolvers

I thought the same thing about Lugers, P-38s, Garands, Enfields and Springfields ad infinitum "back in the day" (late fifties and early sixties). Of course, prior to 1968, you could buy them through the mail with little age limits, no background checks, no limited numbers and no waiting...
