    Carbine effective range...

For strictly varmits under 75 yards I'd look at the .17 cal's. A 55 grn .223 with 3100 fps at the muzzle will take you out to 300 yards.

Gibbs extreme quest in .303 any good

The price seems good. Reworked Gibbs .303 rifles catch that price as a retail, no? With the "extreme quest" version you will most likely get an excellent receiver and some decent assembly. .75" @ 100 is pretty good. I'd ask for pictures of the rifle and target and go with what you see.

IDPA Procedures go against my training.

As already stated in this topic, dry firing a modern firearm will not harm the fire control group at all. At the same time, if I get the chance to handle a fine firearm of a fellow shooter I ask their permission to try the trigger on an unloaded handgun. What makes me cringe is when a shooter...

AR15 optics-Do we really need "tactical"?

Yuo haven't missed the low drag, tactial, all black anything. The flexability of the AR is one of it's top most features. For your task a 20 inch goverment barrel and an adjustable scope sounds great. For durability go chrome lined and get a boresnake. An AR can be anything.

    How critical is the crown?

With a SKS the best crown in the world wouldn't matter. Beside that, once you shorten the barrel you will most likely run into cycling problems. Cut, grind, file and crown. It will be a good lesson in basic gunsmithing.

.223 Bolt Action w/ the Following:

Without posting a purpose for the firearm, it's tough to get a good idea going. I think you might be looking for a rifle to practice with. """""""""""""""""""""IF""""""""""""""""""""""""" that's the idea, I have to ask if you have a .22 rimfire? If you have the time 3 or 4 days a week and...

Unusual? malfunction w/Bushy AR please help

Sorry for the back to back post..... The photo really doesn't show where I shortened the tube but the thinning of the tube on the bottom shows o.k. but the wear of the buffer shows the positive engagement of the detent very well.

Unusual? malfunction w/Bushy AR please help

Without actually seeing your rifle it's hard to really be 100% sure about anything, and when you do get to see one in person sometimes fixing it can still be a 50/50 thing. I reread your previous posts and didn’t see any mention about a failure until your first failure. With your bolt...

Unusual? malfunction w/Bushy AR please help

Hey beta, Badger Arms hit this one easy. You'll have this up and going in no time. The buffer has no function in holding the buffer retaining detent in it's proper postion. If you carefully look at the buffer detent, you will notice it has a shoulder that holds the extention at the proper...

+1000 meter sights on mil-surp guns- why?

The first thing that comes to mind is the practice of volley fire on an advancing formation. There are most likely some other reasons, they just don't come to mind at the moment.

    New Springfield M1 rifles

Man you guys are really up on the current Garand information. I read the discussion and noticed that it is mentioned that if I become a member the Garand Cllectors Association I don't have to shoot a qualifier? Is that correct? The Danish models are looking very nice.!!!!!!

cold hot cold hot cold hot cold hot!

When I expect to hunting for an extended lenght of time, say for 2 or 3 days straight, I leave my firearm outside at night. I usually have access to a rack outside the sleeping quarters. Or I'll leave on, not in a case locked in the trunk or cab. If I'm out more than 3 days, I'll leave it...

Federal XM193 Metal case BT ammo

XM193 is 5.56 NATO, not .223 Remington. With a .223 Rem chamber you will see pressure signs on the XM193 brass. I would not recommend firing XM193 in the Rem 700 you have. I'm sure the 700 action will withstand the pressure increase of the type of abuse. But to really ring out a 55 gr FMJ, I'd...

Another new AR-15 owner with ammo question

Before you try the surplus ammo make sure you have a 5.56 Nato chamber. If you try 5.56 surplus in a .223 REM chamber you can run into serious pressure problems. Shooting .223 REM in a 5.56 chamber is no problem. I only mention this becuase you didn't say anything about a model or make of your...

How accurate is a box stock Remington 700 .308?

Mine will stay under .75 moa also out to 200 yards. I've never shot groups past that. I have no problem hitting 3 inch triangles between 325 and 375 yards. .308 win leuy 4.5x14x40 badger rings and base vslh model

What to do now? Ring and base issue.

You need to get the stripped screw staightened out before you can continue. You will waste ammo trying to zero in a wandering point of aim. I also agree with Art, the base should mate perfectly [by eye] with the reciever. The wrong base could've contributed to the poor fit of the one screw.
