i know your pain. when my son was that age i eventually settled for a 243 cal tikka hunter model because the gun had a beefy 22 in barrel and it was heavy. it was a trade off ,,a heavy gun with less recoil or a light gun that would teach him bad habbits.

i agree about the see through mounts, for one ,,they are too tall to cheak the gun and see through the scope and i believe that any wimpy mount that stands that tall can get knocked out of alignment easy (and their ugly).

h4350 does well for me but i wouldnt hesitate to use imr. my sons 30-06 is loaded with H and my 7mag is loaded with IMR. i dont live in extreme environments so i couldnt tell if extreme powder is needed. cartridges have been loaded for hundreds of years without extreme powders.
