    A deer in the crosshairs????

In NE PA where I hunt that would be near a trophy buck.

Tracking and hunting a poacher wounded wild Wood Bison bull

Nice read and a great job on your part. Very few things make me as mad as poachers who have no intent on making a harvest. I was up close to a Bison (not sure of variety) once in my life in FL of all places. This one was an illegal pet at a rescue shelter. Very intimidating animal, the ground...

    Good Metering 9MM Powder?

I use HP38 and Power Pistol with my Lee auto disc. Both stay within 0.1gr without any problem.

Who uses a single shot for deer

I would think that a Ruger #1 in 270 would have very close to the same recoil as a -06. Regardless any of your choices will work well for deer. My son uses 243 with the 100gr PPU SP. When I hunt Jersey I use a single shot CVA Optima black powder, no chance of a reload. Plenty of guys using R#1...

    30-30 leverevolution

My son (15) killed 2 deer last year with the 160 Leverevolution 30/30 last season. They work fine for a kill. I have seen better accuracy from the Winchester 150gr super X. I havent ever seen what they do to a deer but I have herd good things. My son also shoots a 336 from the early 70's...

    Guest hunting in the US?

I had no idea that CO HL was so stringent. I will see a couple guys tonight that hunt NJ and CO and I will ask them what they needed to prove competency.

    The one you let go...

Im sorry to hear that you cant let a questionable shot walk. I have found several dead deer over the years because someone missed them and they ran off with a gut shot or other fatal wound. The spirit of the hunt isnt all about shooting the woods up in hopes that something drops.

    Guest hunting in the US?

Something to keep in mind. To my knowledge all states require hunter education before license. If I live in NJ and hunt PA I have to first submit proof of prior license (or Hunter ed) in another state. When you come be sure to bring a copy of your hunting license, im assuming that Norway has...

    460xvr factory ammo

I have been trying to find time to develop a load for my 460xvr 8-3/8 to use this season on whitetail and hopefully a black bear. I have all the components I just dont have the time to do the job as of now. Can someone recommend a good factory load for the job? Options might be good as...

    What hand cannon?

I dont care for SA revolvers. I love my 460xvr scoped from a rest 3 out of 5 are touching at 100yds. Recoil is stout but manageable. If it walks away from a 460 then you better start running. Try one and I bet you like it. Second choices would be a SRH in 454 or 480 or a 629s&w

    The Game Taste?

I brine most cuts before cooking. Stews I soak the cubes in a light brine while im browning the onions and peppers. Rinse it once or twice then toss it in to brown. Other cuts like back strap (loin) I simply marinade before cooking. She may never like the taste, or she may have to eat it a few...

    D-2 for blades

IMO this is one of the best multi purpose (gutting, skinning, rough butchering) knife designs. I am a big fan of Buck in general and carry a stockman daily. http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=product.detail&productID=4047 When making a knife I would work something very close to the...

    Your last meal THR style

My favorite meals would generally include fish/game anyway. Starter- Marinated and grilled venison back strap. Cooked rare over an open wood fire. A few glasses of homemade wine. Main- Pan seared yellow fin tuna, again very rare with some wasabi paste side of finocchio (fennel) to help cleanse...

    D-2 for blades

Im a machinist for many years and I have ground my share of cutting tools and a knife or 2. I use D-2 for a variety of things like shear blades with great success. I am considering a 6" multi=purpose hunting knife. I would like to go with 3/32 D-2 for the blank. Ill machine the shape and taper...

Northeastern deer hunting is like office work

Its like big game fishing. Hours of boredom for moments of excitement. Then hours of overeating and overdrinking while telling 2 hour stories of the 2 minute kill

    Shooting the Spirit Moose

What a rotten way to put it. Meat is easy to come by, favorable public opinion on hunters is not. We are stewards of the land, animals, and men who came before us. Not to mention our sons and daughters that we hope will follow us.

Opinions on 'Field' shotguns being used for Home Defense?

In all the SD shootings I have read about I dont ever recall pattern being an issue. If you can get the gun in your hands and pull the trigger on the BG before he does the same to you I am pretty sure you will live for another day. Be familiar with the gun and where it is when you need it...

    Rifle for kids

I have a SR-22 for my daughter 8y/o. Collapsed the stock (and pinned for NJ) and she loves it. When she gets bigger I will expand the stock as she does. Cheap BSA 4x on top and she blasts the centers out of the targets every time.

Strangest thing you came across while hunting

Read my story in this thread. I was in the old Silica Sand Wash when I found the alter. Where about are you from?

Opinions on 'Field' shotguns being used for Home Defense?

I know that my 30" BPS will go bang every time I pull the trigger regardless of load and or conditions. I have also put thousands of rounds through it to proove my point. I certainly wouldnt trust any tacticool model over my tried and true friend. Also as a side note: I load the first one with...
