    The RUGER OLD ARMY Club

Been looking for one of those myself (5 1/2" blued fixed sights) to sort of finish my little collection. Got the SS fixed sight 5 1/2" and 3 adjustable sighted 7 1/2" revolvers (2 SS and 1 blued)... Good find! rclark 182.

So it takes me about 2hrs to load

I don't mind the time it takes either. Not a race to see how many I can spit out an hour or how fast I can shoot.... Of course, I do not shoot semi-autos except a bit of .22LR once in awhile. For the most part my shooting is all single action, so don't go through enough that the single stage...

    Magnum primers with Longshot

Buck, for .44Mag, I marked 10g-12g as 'accurate' on my load table. I settled on 11.0g with standard primer (240g SWC at 1182fps) for 'my' load if I ever need to use this powder again. YMMV of course!

    Magnum primers with Longshot

I did all my testing with Long Shot with standard primers (.45 Colt, .44Mag, .44Spec, and .357) except I did do a back to back test (curiosity) while doing my .44Mag testing. Draw your own conclusions. At the distance I was testing both were accurate. .44Mag 6 1/2" 10.0 Long Shot, 240g...

    .44 mag or .45 LC

FYI, Brian Pearce's son took a Black Bear hunting last year with a Ruger medium frame BH (same as the New Vaquero frame for those that don't know). Very good results. The medium frame revolvers can handle what is referred to as Tier 2 loads (up to 23K psi) which is plenty for most...

    .44 Special Reloads

For .44 Special, I've standardized on the Skeeter load. 7.5g of Unique/Universal under 240g SWC . Basically all I shoot in mine now. One exception is my .44Spec CA Bulldog where I drop to 6.0g of Unique/Universal. I've tested a lot of other powders too and they work well, but I just...

    45 Colt load question

If you look at that article I referenced above, it is basically where the Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 load concept came from.

    45 Colt load question

Well, first I've found that Universal, Unique, and now 20/28 I can use one for the other. YMMV of course.... 8.5g of Unique under 250g RNFP has always been a safe standard load for .45 Colt down through the years. I use it in both my flattop/New Vaquero .45s and of course the larger BH. Here...

    45 Colt load question

5 1/2" barrelled BH Over my chronograph 8.5g of Unique/Universal pushing a 250g RNFP gives me ~970fps. Standard .45 Colt load. When I load with Unique this is the load I use... I Know Taffin (from his books) likes 8.0g which is also a good load.

Do you reload 1 or all of your cartridges?

Reload for everything except of course .22. I solved the 9mm and .45 ACP auto orbit problem but just shooting revolvers ;) .

    Powderpuff 44 Mag Load Anyone?

My goto load is 10g of Unique under 240g bullet for .44Mag. No need for 'thumpers'. If you want to duplicate the Skeeter .44Spec load drop down to 8.5g under 240g bullet, or 7-7.5g for a standard .44 special load. You can use Universal or 20/28 too just like Unique. For real powderpuff loads...

Reloading smokless cartridges with Pyrodex or Black Powder?

I too get occasional split cases with normal loads that go full length of case. No biggie. I just threw out 3 .44 Special cases with split mouths Saturday in fact. Nothing more to add as all has been covered, I think :) .

    I cheated on her...

Nice! Now your .44s have a big brother they can look up to :) . Let us know how it shoots!

    Ruger Blackhawk

Some reading material : When talking about 'strength' of .45 Colt Ruger large frame SA revolvers I like to point to two articles : Linebaugh Dissolving the Myth .45 Colt and Seyfried on the .45 Colt And then for the medium frame Blackhawk flattop : Brian Pearce .45 Colt Note that...

How many of you carry reloads in your SD guns?

Yes. Of course. Shoot what I load, and load what I shoot. .44Spec is my CC caliber. Simple 240g SWC is the bullet.

One and just one. Pick your choice.

.45 Colt. Load up/down, big hole. Load heavy bullets when needed. Proven. Just the best there is IMO. :)

What caliber do you load the most for and why?

.45 Colt. Because it is my favorite caliber and shoot it the most. Doesn't get any better no how and will always be 'the' caliber for this man. .44 Special would be the next best as it is an 'almost' favorite.

    45 colt loads

777 works very well too. Plus you can use you curret powder measure with it. Just slightly compress it with your bullet and good to go. In .45 Colt, 23g by weight (not volume) is the load I like with a standard CCI-300 primer. Pushes a 250g RNFP 919fps.

Is/are there max velocities for cast bullets?

I've pushed 240g SWC to 1333fps (high as my testing went) with no leading in 'my' .44 Mag revolvers. These were 15 BHN bullets too, so not extra hard. So, if there is a max velocity ... I haven't found it yet. There is a simple rule of thumb formula for matching hardness to pressure : BHN =...
