Gee, I wish they made a......

I’d like to see Ruger design a line of pump action rifles and carbines. Not a weak action, like the Colt Lightning or old Remington’s, but more a rotating bolt design like the Rem. 760, or an AR. My favorite calibers would be .357, .44 mag, and .45 Colt. I’d like a tubular magazine, but a rotary...

Raccoon whips my 2 dogs after being shot out of a tree and falling 30 feet!

No doubt racoons are tough, they grow up that way. I have watched many, many dog/racoon fights. I could probably write a book, ha. I am a Southwest Texas rancher and varmint control is an everyday, time consuming duty. I keep a predator and trapping log and we, mostly me, remove between 200 and...

    Question on Temperature Sensitivity

Chemistry of reaction rates, kinetics, dictates that chemical reactions, powder burn rates, are temperature dependent. Rates are higher at higher temperatures. This cannot be avoided. The rate dependency is exponentially related to the activation energy as expressed in the Arrhenius equation...

Why pistol cartridges in a rifle?

CraigC has it right. A handgun cartridge in a rifle barrel is a very different animal because of the extra velocity, improved sight radius, and lower report. They are not a long range tool typically, but are very effective to slightly over 100 yards. They kill very well without typical tissue...

    Skunk sprayed my Labrador

I have ranch dogs that are sprayed frequently. A vet recommended Skunk Off. It is amazing. It immediately removes all traces of skunk odor. If it doesn't, you haven't applied it to the right spot yet. Skunk odor is butyl mercaptan. This stuff neutralizes it on contact. Nothing else works, we've...

    10mm for deer hunting

I have no experience with the 10mm. I have taken many deer with the .357 mag in a rifle. Ballistically the 10 mm should be just as capable. The key to success is putting the bullet where you want it.

Are any Winchester Rifles made in the US still?

Looking at our governments tax structure, it's amazing that Ruger and the other few companies still here, aren't moving offshore. This doesn't even include the regulations forced on companies operating in the U.S. Wake up America.

    What is your One Caliber

I'd have to pick .30 caliber, but I'd sure miss my .22s. I shoot 6 different cartridges in .30 caliber and 4 center fire cartridges in .22. I have many other calibers but none as useful as these two. Concentrating on these two sure simplifies stocking reloading supplies too.

Rem 700/Model Seven vs. Ruger M77

If you can find an older Rem. 700 with the 2 position safety, that locks the bolt, in your caliber of choice, snag it. Otherwise the new Rugers are best, despite the safety not locking the bolt. My favorites are the Predators.

Ever want a 357 Lever Gun?

Great round in a rifle I have a Marlin and a Winchester lever .357. Great cartridge in a rifle. I have pistols chambered for .357 too, but it really shines in a longer barrel. Great for deer and hogs. Low recoil, low muzzle blast and little blood shot meat. I now use a little Ruger 77/357 with...

    Why so many DRT online?

I've taken several hundred deer. I've grown to prefer the center shoulder shot. I've used about every cartridge out there. Mostly, 7mm Mag., in my youth, a few decades of .30/06, and for the last few years .308. The behind the shoulder shot deer usually runs for a few seconds. Anything high...

Spotting scope, angled eye piece v.s. straight

Depends I use both. I mostly use the straight through view at the range and for quick views of anything but, if I need to do serious long glassing secessions, the angled view is much nicer. My scope with the angled optic is a 90 mm objective while the straight view is a 60 mm. It is easier to...

    Opinions regarding Kimber 84M

Nice and lite I have a Montana in .308. It carries like a feather. Shoots great. Really jumps and scopes need to be tough. I would recommend it if you still hunt a lot or are hiking and hunting.

What is your "nearly perfect" cartridge?

Having used a .300 Savage since 1959 and one of several .308s for the last 20 years as all purpose rounds either gets my vote for the deer and hog upper end game. I'd go with a .30/06 or something bigger(.338) in Alaska or somewhere the elk, moose, and big bears roam.

    Are Hawkbills versatile ?

Hawkbills might work, naturally. Think about the big cats. They carry several hawkbills in each hand, so to speak. They can cause mean cuts but are primarily for grabbing and pulling prey toward those big teeth. If you had a hawkbill in one hand and a dagger in the other you might have a...

20 Gage Shot Recommendations for Raccoons

Shot size 7&1/2 or 6s will work fine and be safer too. My grandson shot a 30# bobcat at 30 yards and a one shot kill with 8s in a 20 gauge with cylinder bore choke. I was there. Raccoons are tough but not against a 20 gauge. We usually hunt with .22 rim fire long rifle, a lot less noise. Two...

Assistance Sought - Gerber BMF and original LMF knives

Old LMT I finally found my old LMT in my collection. It too had rusted on the side that touches the sheath. Nylon polymer fabrics cause this as the acid leaches out over time and temperature and rusts things. Remember the old Remington Nylon 6 rifles? Pop the action out and you will find plenty...

    Hunting knives

Dressing and butchering I have tried lots of knives on hundreds of deer and big game. The Cold Steel Master Hunter will do most anything. I usually find myself using a Mora these days because the blade is not too wide and corners easily. I have worn out two of these. Actually, most any knife...

    savage hog hunter

Just helped son in law mount a scope and load up for his new rifle in .308. It is a Ruger M77 stainless with black plastic stock. It shot well and he took a huge axis buck, 232 #, with it the next day. It is a nice rifle, and definitely "all weather".

What rifle do you carry in the woods all day?

Rifle usually with me? I usually carry a Ruger .357 bolt gun or a Ruger .22 Hornet 24" barrel model. If I am after hogs, it'll be an AR of some configuration and if it's deer I'm after, it'll be a .308 of some type. So every day is a new requirement but if I don't have special plans, it is my...
