Best .380 Personal Protection Ammo ???

For pocket 380's like the P3AT I prefer name brand generic FMJ's from Win, Fed or Rem. They are cheap (so you can practice and check reliability) and feed well. I seem to remember from one of Vincent Di Maio's books/papers on wound ballistics that skin is roughly equivalent to 4" of gelatin...

    Help me secure my apartment.

I'd get a small Homak safe or a small office safe for your handguns - be sure you weigh it down or chain/bolt it to something so it cannot be carried off easily. Ideally, you should be able to lock your long guns in the safe as well, but if you cannot, you could just remove the rifle bolts and...

    Next gun? Gimme some ideas...

I think you need a small pistol that you can carry in your front pocket. Perhaps a Kahr PM9, Keltec P3AT (oops not 9mm Para) or something like that.

    CheaperThanDirt.com Gun Holster Mishap

Are you one of those guys who legal name is Aloysius, Woodward or something like that but goes by "Chuck"? Just kidding! ;) ;) I don't think mail order places are set up to use aliases on mailing labels - they just put the name on the credit card unless it is a gift. Looks like its time to get...

A glimpse into duty weapon boot camp

Hey a 1911 was not there. The Model 10 should say to the 1911 - "You're a pimped out freak and not a real working gun - you'll only be carried by a reserve officer gunwriter" ;) ;)

    Ket-Tec 380

I'll second the above post. If you get an earlier production 2nd generation P3AT, be sure you call kel-tec and get the upgraded extractor and extractor spring - that finally fixed the failure-to-extract problem that happens with some 2nd gen models (they will send you the parts free and you...

Is second strike capability vastly overrated?

"second strike" is nice to have but not a show stopper - the 1911 does NOT have a "second strike" capability either.

    kel-tec p-11 springs???

Sm, I think you should be a gun writer ;) :) ;) :) After firing 15k rounds in your P11 and doing all kinds of tests that show the P11 is a solid, reliable pistol, you conclude that "So I concur with those that a small revolver is hard to beat for a reliable , always, CCW. Proven, will continue...

    Formulating the Pressure Wave Hypothesis

Hi Michael, Just out of curiosity, what was the title of your PhD thesis at MIT?

Can't Attest to the Veracity but the Sentiment is Spot On

I've seen the signature line "One shot, one kill. Recoil is all I feel" at ar15.com quite a few years ago.

    Formulating the Pressure Wave Hypothesis

In Michael's text - it is unclear to me if the "center of mass shots" that miss the central nervous system are assumed to hit the heart or not. If the center of mass shots are assumed to hit the heart, then I don't know what the big deal is - it seems to me that a shot that penetrates deeply...

Tell Me About S&W's Model 39

S&W made a modern variant of the venerable S&W39-2 for a short while in the mid-1990's - it was called the S&W909. It used a single column 9 shot magazine and had a curved grip backstrap like the model 39 (unlike the other members of the 39xx family which have a straight backstrap. I see used...

My journey to a truly great 9mm...

Sig P239 - IMO, very accurate and easily carried. HK USP9C or S&W3913 are other choices.

    What are good gun-related jobs?

I'd forget about it. Nothing ruins a hobby more than making it your livelihood. Of course, if you are wealthy and can afford to risk some money, go for whatever you like!

GF's buyin me a gun for Christmas! What would you ask for?

Unless she is your fiance, I would be sure *you* fill out the paperwork and she pays - you don't want her accusing you of stealing it from her or being the recipient of a straw purchase if things go sour - happened to one of my coworkers.

What 9mm if money was no object??

For range use and/or defense, if money is no object - I'd get either a HK P7M8 or a Walther P5 compact or perhaps both :)

I have a question for those of you with SHTF guns.

I don't own a tactical vest, but I have one of those Samco magazine clamps/couplers and a Blackhawk buttstock magpouch for my AR (both of which I rarely use - but are nice to have) So if I had to, I could carry 3 mags with the rifle without strapping on a vest or wearing a belt pouch.

    Good gun stores in NC.

I like Young Guns in Apex, NC. Last time I was there, he had a good inventory and decent prices (http://www.younggunsinc.com/) at least for a "retail" shop.

    Best LED flashlight?

Unless he is a flashlight "junkie" - I'd forget about a light that uses 123 batteries. Yeah, 123's are quite cheap mailorder but most people might not bother or know and they will be shocked by how expensive they are in a retail store (even Walmart). With that in mind, I'd recommend a...
