Don't know of a definitive source off the top of my head. I'm quite sure that many small caliber rifles and shotguns were prevalent for putting food on the tablea and ridding the homestead of varmints.

I have a close friend that loves to shoot with me. He often comments that he would just love to own such-and-such gun/caliber. When I ask him why he doesn't purchase one, he tells me be only buys when he finds it for a "steal".
I only purchase when it doesn't interfere with my family's needs...
