Care and feeding of Marlin 60?

Before my mother passed away a few years ago she had a #60 she had up on the farm. She would occasionally get a rabbit or squirrel. But CCI Mini-Mags was all she would shoot in it. She said other stuff "gummed it up".

    Black Bear Rifle

rifle... Mountain Man, Between the 2 calibers you mentioned, the 308 with a heavy bullet like a 175, 180 or 190 in a good hunting type projectile, will do the job. Practice with it enough to get better than fair with it. I just carried the 44 mag because I had it and it's a light rifle that...

Marlin 45/70 XLR, JM-stamped found, do it?

what mine cost me... After 6 years of looking for one, I went to Gander Mountain last November and ordered one (guide gun). I wish I could have handled it a bit more when it came in. I don't think I would have bought it. The date codes on it shows mine is a "Remlin" Sep-2014 model in 45-70...

    Black Bear Rifle

If you already own the 308 and or 30-30 just use a 180 or better bullet. For those calibers I prefer a Nosler Partition of similar type projectile. Living here I've hunted all over Tennessee. An hour from the Cherokee National Forrest, All I ever use there for bear is a 44 Mag Winchester 1965...

The joy of watching your child shoot well.

2 Daughters that grew up shooting NRA Bullseye and IPSC. Grand Daughter (23) learned to shoot at 8 or 10 years old. 17 year old grand son shoots small bore with me. He's pretty good at it too. Youngest grandson (12) has fired a few shots. But in my eyes he hasn't matured enough yet. 2...

    How many rounds per trip?

When I was active in "smallbore", I was practicing 100 rounds of match grade 22 LR a week. I would love to start back. I just can't afford $14 a box of 50... At least not at this time. Maybe if Social Security ever gets a raise... Well, maybe not.

    Any unhappy Ruger American owners?

Our oldest daughter's friend has an "American" chambered in 308. It shoots very good. The adjustable trigger is pretty good. Not quiet as good as the OLD Remington's. But very good. I was able to adjust it to 4 pounds with no problem. It's a little light for me. But for tramping through...

    marlin 1895 45-70 guide gun

Not NOW...! Not NOW ! I've used fine toolmakers files, stones and 1200 grit wet or dry to finally get MOST of everything smoothed out. I had been trying to find one for 6 years. NOBODY had them in this area. Gander Mountain had a "Black Friday" sale the week before Thanksgiving. I went...

    marlin 1895 45-70 guide gun

I got mine just before Thanksgiving 2015. Expect to spend a lot of time getting the bugs out of it. Or send it to a lever gun specialist. Here it is almost the middle of April, 2016 and I still haven't gotten all the bugs worked out. I think it's a wonderful rifle. If they had only spent...

    Leaning towards a Scout Rifle

A friend of mine has this very rifle. We shot it week before last. He has a higher dollar long eye relief scope on it that is clear "as glass". It grouped very well at 100 yards. And with the scope setup like he has it, it works just like Col. Jeff Cooper wanted it to. Both eyes open is NOT...

    Popular cast bullets...?

What is your favorite cast bullet for your favorite rifle? Post at least the basics. Caliber, design, flat base or gas check, alloy and weight. Why is it your favorite? Just curious about what everyone likes in what gun. Thanks, Victor

    25-06 best choice?

I have 2 rifles chambered in 25-06. Both are Rem 700s. The old Custom Varmint Special I bought in 1972 and started loading for it at that time. After I found a good bullet, it has never failed to bring home the meat. But proficiency in bullet placement with the right bullet is paramount in...

    Gander Mountain prices...

I'm glad I could provide you with something funny to laugh at. Some times the heart over takes the brain. This was the first one of these rifles I had seen in 45-70 in 6 years. But since my favorite small town gun shop went out of business, I still crave the presence of blued steel and walnut.

    Gander Mountain prices...
