Seems to me the SKS has advantages in:
-being slimmer shaped
-less room for different kinds of malfunctions (having a fixed mag and all)
-easier access to the chamber and bolt for clearing malf's quicker
-shooting a bigger bullet
-and being more tolerant of foreign debris
But the AR has so many...
In terms of 'dramas', horror movies like "The Purge" make a pretty good case for guns, lol! Although it's a little too far-fetched to make a real impact.

FIREARM CONTROLS IN BRITAIN PART I THE HISTORY OF FIREARMS CONTROLS IN GREAT BRITAIN"

I find it hard to take international gun statistics seriously since other countries constantly skew their numbers and use stat reporting that lowers the overall numbers, e.g. Great Britain only reports gun violence that results in conviction.
Yeah that's true. I wonder if it's adds up enough to cause a truly significant increase in wear, though. I don't know how much less the pressure kept from the last inches of barrel would be compared to peak pressure.
It is Lott's website. I guess ymmv, I haven't had trouble navigating it in the past or having to download things. I'll take another look.
EDIT: Yes the data is in downloadable files, that makes sense for raw data, but the important parts like his interpretation and such is under the research...
Going back to the OP,
For the average person who doesn't think about guns often, I like to start with some basic principles. Self defense is a universally accepted idea. OK now, don't you want the most effective tool for self defense, a gun? You can bet that a bad guy could definitely have one...
Are the peak pressures actually different, or only the amount of time the system stays pressurized though? Doesn't peak pressure occur right after the bullet has passed the port , then the extra 1.5" at the end shouldn't change it. I would think the temperature and velocity are the factors that...
Just on intuition, I would think it would wear at the same rate as a 14.5" carbine using the same gas port diameter. The extra barrel length at the end wouldn't affect the characteristics of the gas as it's hitting the gas port, or am I mistaken?
I get that there would be more port erosion over time with more of a nozzle effect, but does more fouling in the gas tube actually occur from this in the real world? Has anyone actually removed their gas tube and said 'Wow there's a lot more fouling in here after I put in an adjustable gas...
I had a squib load with TulAmmo about a year ago, so I switched to Red Army since then. No problems so far, but I just use it for plinking so I can't really judge the accuracy of either.
2nd ammendment people may be winning to some extent in Red states, but being in NY I certainly know what it feels like to be "losing" in a Blue state. The only reason they got the SAFE Act passed in NY was because of the Sandy Hook shooting. I think mass shootings has a lot to do with it.
