If I were out in the open (alway from cover) in the firing range of an active shooter. I would think dropping to the floor and going prone, to reduce your profile and hopefully make the shooter think you are already dead. From there quickly draw your pistol and return fire. In my opinion any...
You must learn the basics of grappling and striking and spar consistently to become comfortable. However always remember that you must adapt these arts for real life self defense situations and integrate the with weapons training.
My heart goes out to the families of those who were murdered in Tuscon recently.
However, what is important is what we can learn from such a horrible tragedy.

It seems to me that the ideal time to take action would be when he was closest to you, when he was herding you into the house. From here you can attempt a disarm and neutralize the thug's firearm while simultaneously going for your own. It is my opinion that anytime an attacker puts his gun on...

palm strikes can be effective but not as effective as punching. remember there was boxing for hundred of years before gloves (yes I know they punched differently)

I have punched plenty of people in the face and never broken my hand. I did jam my thumb once though but i didn't know I did it until way after the fight and was perfectly able to continue to fight.
You are going to need to be extremely clever and quick to disarm someone if he has you dead to rights. All he has to do is point the gun right and pull a trigger, you have to do a lot of **** right.
Not just handguns, any serious injury is usually not painful until later. Watch the UFC where Sylvia has his armed snapped by an armbar. He didnt know he broke it and even moved it around saying "look its not broken". Of course after the adreniline wore off I bet he was in a world of hurt.
