    Press mounting thoughts

I mounted my 550 on a 2x8 (if I remember correctly) and c clamped it to the hobby bench. This allows me to relocate easily if I want a different set up or to accommodate other activities on the bench. My bench is not strong enough so when I have the press mounted (most of the time) I have a 2x4...

    44 mag & IHMSA

When I shot IHMSA, I used a contender with a 10" 44mag barrel and also an open barrel; 7mm/30-30 in 14". I loaded the 44 to standard loading manual at a notch below maximum. Had no problem tipping the rams (those dadburn turkeys would go down hard but were way harder to hit! :D). Wish they...

    Para 1911 Question

I can not offer any help, as my Para feeds fine. Will be interested in responses for my "general education". Jim

what would you put into a range box?

I take a roll of construction paper to provide a clean background on the wood frame at the outdoor range. I'm often shooting with a friend and we can get the targets a little tighter and don't have a problem with previous holes looking like fliers. Jim

If you carry a snub iwb, which position and cant do you prefer and why?

My S&W snubby is just to the right of the belt buckle with a slight cant. Easy to get to while seated (even with seatbelt). Jim

Martial arts that pair well with gun use?

I would say Aikido for the top of the list. We worked defending against weapons, multiple attackers and making the ground your friend right from the start. :D (That's helped me more than one time in situations having nothing to do with self defense). I also like the attitude of less focus on...

Assuming you are a permit holder how often do you carry?

I work on a college campus so don't carry at work, although I do have my 9 in the truck. Other than work, I've always got my snubby with me. My attitude is it's like my vehicle jack, hope I don't need it but wouldn't want to not have it if I did. Jim

Happy 4th everyone! you gonna shoot today? (merged threads)

Not today......chores around the house til mid afternoon and then grilling with family and friends later this afternoon. But was able to get off work a little early yesterday and got to the range before the rains came in! :) Shot my marlin 22 levergun and my henry 45 colt levergun. I shoot...

    Targets that make sound

TM, Was in a CEU seminar the last couple of days and they had a couple of clips of you in action! :D

    Targets that make sound

We were using balloons at the range for off hand cap and ball rifle shooting but the range officers shut that down. When asked why, the response was that the birds think the little bits that got missed in clean up were bugs, would be eaten by birds and hurt them. Jim Ps also asked about...

    gun safe location

I'm in humid sw florida and my safe is in the garage. I have a three car garage with a two car door. The third bay is a workshop. The safe is draped and has misc stuff stacked in front so is not immediately obvious. I have a heat stick in it that keeps humidity at bay. I figure the camo for...

Open sights, close to the eye

I just mounted a receiver aperture sight (skinner) on my lever gun. I left out the insert so it's more of a ghost ring. Way easier for me that the leaf/buckhorn style. Very easy to put the front sight in the middle of the circle and on the target. I wear glasses with bifocals. With the...

    The Marlin 39 Club

I've got a new Henry 45 colt that I just put the skinner receiver sight on. Whether I'm shooting one of my old battle rifles or the new lever gun, my 39a that I inherited from Grandad is always at the shooting line. I like the Skinner sight on the Henry so I just ordered one for the Marlin...

    Shrinking brass

rcmodel, Good point to keep in mind when I load for my pistols but I'm loading for a rifle (see first post). gamestalker, In this particular instance, trimming first worked out but I agree, in general, sizing first then trimming is the way to go. I was looking at my notes, after...

    Shrinking brass

rcmodel, You folks type faster than I do. :) As I don't use any more crimp than necessary to hold under recoil, I'll probably be fine. And of course, I'm not shooting long range so these variations are probably not worth the bandwidth we're using to discuss them...... (and...
