"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

Upgrade update. Timney sent a new trigger which I received and installed last night. Clearly an improvement, so we will see how this impacts my precision. Regarding scopes, I jumped the, (ahem), gun - and bought a new to me scope. It is an Athlon Ares BTR 4.5-27x50. It's not 3x on the low end...

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

When Walmart had rifles on clearance, they would mark them down in steps. Maybe 15% for a bit of time, then 25%, then 50%, then 75%. There was a website that tracked and reported various big box stores sales and these were closely followed on some forum websites. The general public wasn't...

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

Thanks to troy fairweather's advice on removing stripped scope base screws, I am able to SLOWLY (definitely not smoothly) move forward on my upgrades on this rifle. This is ironic because doing anything to this rifle other than sell it goes against his very strong recommendation to sell it. His...

    Scope Base Screw Stripped

troy fairweather for the win! Almost too easy. With a sacrificial T15, I filed the end to a 45 degree to center the now dedicated T15 Torx chisel in the screw head. Secured in a vise, hammered until it seemed to form a Torx shape that provided solid resistance. Replaced it with a sharp clean...

    Scope Base Screw Stripped

It’s been soaking with liquid wrench. I’ve acquired an impact screwdriver, left handed drill bit screw extractor set, and some new Torx bits to file down flat and tapered. I’m almost ready - I need to make a wood block to clamp the action/barrel down before I bring down the hammer. Sorry for the...

Red ramp front sight - yea or nay?

I have a Beretta 92F with the white dots on black and a Beretta 92X with an orange dot on black. The front sight stands out when back lit and the white stands out better when not. I do not prefer the orange dot - not enough contrast.

    Scope Base Screw Stripped

Had that thought as well. I think the odds of me mucking up the receiver are high.

    Scope Base Screw Stripped

FYI, I have the feeling that I should insert the MEME from Caddyshack. "Well?! We're waiting!" First time I've had this issue with a rifle, so I should count myself lucky. But really, it's lack of experience. I don't change out scope bases very often.

    Scope Base Screw Stripped

Will do. I had previously used a Torx and hit it with a hammer a few times and it stripped a little more. That's where I paused and was thinking I needed to move on to the next option and don't want to mess the next step up, leaving me with more difficult options. So, what I'm hearing is, I need...

    Scope Base Screw Stripped

Looking closer at the base and screw, I think Option 3 won’t leave enough remaining on the shank because of the tapered heads. If I remove the tapered screw head, it will only leave 0.028” of the shank protruding from the receiver, not enough to grab onto with a vise grip. So, I think my...

    Scope Base Screw Stripped

My hope was to progress from least destructive to most destructive, and not try something that would preclude another option, until there are no more options. Will a screw extractor (option 2) preclude drilling the head off (option 3) if a screw extractor doesn’t work? I’m not too concerned...

    Scope Base Screw Stripped

That’s a good idea. I should have done that with the attempt with the torx.

    Scope Base Screw Stripped

See, I should have posted here first. But that is one reason I posted, maybe for the next person, they’ll have the little tricks to make the other little tricks work the first time. I tried the torx, but I did not file it flat. My torx bit actually looks like a cork screw at the end now.

    Scope Base Screw Stripped

Holy torqued, Batman! I was trying to take off the scope ring bases on a Savage Axis to replace them with a picatinny rail. First screw I bubba upped with an allen wrench. It was not moving, so I tried a little heat and tried a little more force (going against my rule of "If you have to force it...

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

I think you're right on the scope being the next logical improvement to improve precision. The scope image was fuzzy to me, so a 1/4" error could easily have been the sight picture. I'll be able to test that theory with swapping out a scope after the trigger arrives. I think with the wood...

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

That's a lot of stuff to go wrong on a gun so I hear what you're saying. Your experience with Savage kind of sounds like my 2004 Ford F150 (can you say "cam phasers"?). Hard to imagine how Ford could put out something with such obvious issues and I paid the price. So far, my Toyota is doing...

Excessive pressure due to chamber out of spec?

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

That's an option I guess. Curious as to what you would buy? If it's shooting good, why would you take a risk on an unknown for more money?

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

Ultimately, I'm thinking about $400 to $500 on a scope and would consider buying used if it's a Leupold or Vortex. What were you shooting at 200-300 yards? If it's the broad side of a barn, color me unimpressed:scrutiny: ;) Anything small, then thumbs up .

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

Brief background. In the salad days of Walmart clearance rifles, I got a wood stock Savage Axis 223 for $12 (I like pointing that out because every time I type "$12", it makes me smile). I finally put together some handloads for it and shot a couple groups. It grouped at between 1/2" and 7/8"...
