.223 Brass resizing. Running into problems

There are four critical dimensions on a cartridge case: Overall length, Cartridge Base to Datum, Case Diameter at the shoulder, and Case Diameter 0.2 inches from the base. It sounds as if your sizing die does not reduce the diameter of the case enough 0.2 inches from the base. What case gauge...

    Lyman cast bullets 1st edition?

Could you check your reference? In my "Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook" from about 1973 there is no listing for a 358423 160 grain wadcutter. There is a listing for a 358432 wadcutter 148 and 160 grain in the reference section. Unfortunately, no load data is given for those bullets.

    Hand load nickel plated cases?

I will never reload nickel plated cases again after two bad experiences. In both cases, years apart, a bit of nickel plating flaked off and stuck to a carbide sizing die resulting in scratching every sized case after that. The first was a Star Press, but I can no remember who made the 45 ACP...

Another hole in the memory question.

It sounds as if the Taurus barrel has a short leade or tight chamber or both. Short leade is a known issue for CZ pistols, but I have not read of it for Taurus. Try plunking your sized cases (not loaded rounds) in the Taurus barrel to test for tight chamber. If short leade is it, seat the...

Another hole in the memory question.

Captain Q., Hercule Poirot is the reference. In my opinion, it is better to seat and crimp in separate steps. I use and recommend taper crimp dies instead of the Lee FCD.

    .223 Sorting Headstamps.......Wow!

There are a couple other things to be concerned about: Off-Center Flash Holes and Unusually Heavy Cases. In my experience, GFL, Aguila, and A-USA cases have many Off-Center Flash Holes. They are not the list above, but PMP cases are the heaviest I've seen. When I first started loading .223...

Question about the Hornady Overall (OAL) Gauge

You did not tell us about your application, e.g., rifle, bullet. etc., so a bit more information might help get more thorough replies. Seating the bullet to the cannelure is the ez button, but changing the seating may or may not shrink your groups. Your target will tell you the answer. I...

Need to eliminate unburnt powder in my Uberti saa

Unburned powder indicates that Acc #5 is too slow for your use. You do not say what caliber and bullet you load for, but Hodgdon lists Titegroup for everything from 25 ACP to 500 S&W Magnum.

    Neck Sizing Problems

It seems to me that using mixed brass with different numbers of firing is causing your issue. Firing the rounds and sizing the cases causes work hardening which leads to spring back. Some cases spring back more than others. I tried the Lee Collet Neck Die and ran into the same thing as you...

reloading 30 30win and using gauges

No, the Wilson gage and Lyman ammo checker do not check the same things. The Lyman checks sized cases or loaded rounds for proper fit. If a case fits in the Lyman, it will fit in any SAAMI chamber. The Wilson gage will accept a fired case. This allows you to compare it to a sized case to...

+/- 0.002" on base to shoulder!?

The fact that your turning the die down a bit reduces the case head to datum length indicates that you have not reached cam over while actually sizing the cases that come out too long. Test this by using a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the bottom of the die and the top of the...

    Shoulder Bump?

Turn your sizing die in about 1/8 to 1/4 turn and try again. You need enough cam-over that the top of the shell holder touches the bottom of the sizing die at the top of the sizing stroke while actually sizing a case. A case increasing in base to datum length when being sized is an indication...

Inconsistent Shoulder Bump-Redding 30-06 FL sized cases

I suggest that you try a test: First, use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the top of the shell holder and the bottom of the Lee die at the top of the stroke when sizing a case. Then, measure the gap between the top of the shell holder and the bottom of the Redding die at the top...

Resizing Die Set Up - Headspace

Rim-less bottleneck cases, without belts, headspace on the shoulder, not the mouth of the case. The critical measurement is from the head of the case to the datum. The "case length/headspace gauge" is a datum based tool. The following is from Lyman's web site: "Lyman recommends that all...

Resizing Die Set Up - Headspace

As others have pointed out above, what you are doing will work. However, some cases resist sizing more than others. Factors such as flex in the linkage of your press, springback due to work hardening of brass, and case lubrication can lead to variations in case head to datum measurements. When...

    Mixing dies & shellholders okay?

Could you elaborate a bit on what the difficulty is? I have found RCBS shell holders to be a bit looser fitting. Otherwise, I use RCBS, Hornady, and Lee shell holders without issues in my Rock Chucker press.
