If you already have a Kitchen aide mixer, the meat grinder is a low cost option that does a decent job. Stay away from the cheap low cost grinders at the big box stores, they are useless for grinding venison.
My father took many turkeys with his 20 gauge before he passed in 2005. All were taken with an old Rem 870 with 2 3/4” shells mod choke. I would definitely have her try a 12 gauge before moving her up. If the recoil is too much, a 20 gauge is a good option. As far as the gun any of the...
I seam to have multiple issues at least one of which is the scope thanks TBS for the suggestion. I had dismissed the scope because the groups improved when I let the barrel cool between shots. I mounted another scope and shot a 1.5” and a 0.7” group at 100 yds with 165 gr loads. I saw some...
I have a 1954 Rem 760 in 30X06 (scope is a Leopold VX II 3x9) it’s never produced good groups since I have had it roughly the last 25 years. Above is a typical target. The three shots without the line through it were taken consecutively without allowing the barrel to cool a 4.25” group at 100...
An Armsco .22LR jams every other shot got to clean it every 5 rounds just to group 2” at 20 yds. A real P.O.S but what can one expect for $50.00 rifle brand new from a big box store.
I now use a Leupold. I replaced an old Weaver that was way to dark with a new Bushnell. After about 4 yrs the Bushnell would fog up in cold weather. I sent it in Bushnell which they in turn sent me a new scope. This used my “once per address lifetime warranty”. Three years later the...
In my experience the best course of action for deer recovery is not to chase a wounded deer. A lung hit deer can easily go 100+ yds if pushed. I wait a minimum of 30 minutes for a gunshot deer and 1 hour for archery shot deer.
Processing a deer isn’t hard all kinds of help is available on the internet although it can be time consuming. If you are going to grind the hamburger a good grinder is essential. The cheap ones just don’t cut it. I use the grinding attachment to a kitchen aid stand mixer. It works...
I took a dandy 8 pt and recovered this “bullet” after it went through the deer. It is a muzzy broadhead. Double lunged it, the deer went about 40 yds looked like someone had taken a gal of red paint and painted a path to the deer. I have never seen so much blood from a deer before.
I also...
A well used 1954 Rem model 760 in 30x06 mainly for sentimental reasons. This was my late father’s rifle that he used when I was a boy. I have personally taken 22 deer, a bear and a hog with it. After 65 years of use and abuse it still can shoot a tack driving group of roughly half a foot at...
I’m shooting an old CVA .50 kit. It likes traditional .49 patched round balls pushed with 80 grains of pyrodex. I’ve tried conicals and more powder with the balls but my groups start to spread.
The neck is a little target for my son (admittedly I have taken deer with neck shots.) It looks like at a very minimum it will penetrate a shoulder to the vitals possibly exiting. What I was originally concerned about was the bullet being stopped by the shoulder.
