I assume you and others mentioning 38 Special rounds are talking about those loaded with smokeless powder. In this case right now I'm just concerned with blackpowder loads. I know that the original 38 Spec cartridge was loaded with a 158 grain bullet and 21.5 grains of BP. So I am hoping that a...
I am curious about what performances are possible with loadings of 357 Mangum rounds with Black powder. I have found some conversations on this site before discussing it. I wanted to see if anyone here has experimented, or knows others who have, with BP in 357 rounds. I have a Winchester carbine...
After searching more online I think I would be better off if I could find more information on attempts to recreate the Frankford Arsenal .44 Martin cartridges like this fellow

Thank you, I assume they are using the 142 grain .454 Hornady balls I can easily find online. Based on these results I guess I should look into using Swiss or Eynsford
3Fg.
You reminded me that "grain" can be a unit of volume and weight. I've meant 30 grains by volume all this time though, so...
Ok. I had been hoping that someone else had already experimented with different loadings and had come up with the measurement I am looking for already. Sadly I cannot yet find anyone who has and has also written about it
I'm sorry I can't recall all of my sources. One I can easily find is the wikipedia article on the 45 Schofield, which itself is sadly lacking any reference to substantiate it. I do also recall a youtube video involving someone talking about Thompson–LaGarde Tests who described the 45 Schofield...
After reading what sources I can find easily via Google search online about the history of the 45 Colt, Schofield, and ACP I can across the fairly consistent story that the 45 ACP was created as more or less as smokeless powder parallel to the 45 Schofield. Both being made originally with 230...
Exactly what I had in mind, sorry I didn't explain that better
Fantasy gun fun project, wanting a 6 shot 1860 equivalent to 44 Colt that I can also use in a lever action
Agreed. I thought I stated this in my last post, I guess I cut it off by accident. What I meant to end with was this. According to Wikipedia the base diameter of the WinMag is .476 ", and Pitman states that the diameter of the chamber at the breech of the chamber is .472". I am not sure how much...
I don't think I have to worry about cutting through to the outside. Here is a photo of an original Richards conversion cylinder loaded with 44 Colt cartridges and and drawing and specs of that revolver from The Pitman Notes Volume Two. You can see that the rims of the cartridges do not get in...
I have been doing research for new potential options for loading reproduction black powder guns. Right now I am curious about the potential .45 Win Mag brass loaded with BP could have for use in both 1860 Colt conversions, and Henry 1860 or Winchester 1866 rifles. Given the dimensions of the...
Thank you, that is very informative. I figured you could get extra powder in a case by taking advantage of the extra space in a hollow base bullet. I'm confused why some like you say they can only get 20 grs in a 38 spl case when the original load for that cartridge was 21.5 grs. Is that all due...
I wanted to convert a cap and ball, for the fun of the challenge. Since you suggest heeled bullets I also have a question about them. Can you safely use a heeled bullet in a barrel meant for a .358 diameter? I'm asking because I was also hoping to make a load that would work in a Winchester 1866...
I took a look and the only hollow bases he has listed right now is a wadcutter and a 105 FP. I'm not an expert but I'm not sure if a bullet that small will expand within the barrel enough to catch the riffling. Or how accurate it may be. Could you or anyone give me some insight into that?
Hello all,
I am looking into getting a cartridge conversion of a Uberti Colt 1851, and I have been wondering how powerful of a black powder cartridge I could use in the gun, and what I could feasibly make for it. I am hoping that maybe some of you others have already tried this out on your own...
