I started with 12ga about 25yrs ago. Started metallic about 5yrs ago with 9.3x57 mauser. Very steep learning curve with 9.3.

I'd say start him with the 30-30 and the 170gr corelokt. I've killed many a deer with that combo. I do most of my hunting with cup and core.

35/30-30 from what I've read used to be a common rebore for shot out 30-30s and 32spec.

I've thought of that. Just don't have any 32cal bullets. If I decide to go the reboring/ chambering route it'd probably be 35/30-30ai. Since I already have 35cal bullets. I reload for 35rem and 35 whelen.Talked to a gunsmith about having it done in standard 35/30-30. I'm a big fan of 35 caliber!

I voted for the 150's. Primarily because all 3 of bolt 06's prefer them. All 3 have 03A3 barrels in them. 2 mausers and an 03A3. They all like the standard military ball loads. I've gotten bang flop out of multiple calibers from 12ga, 20ga, 243, 30-30, 30-06, and 35 rem. Some with reloads others...

I wouldn't mix load data for different makes/brands of hulls. What they were originally loaded with shouldn't really matter as long as they were shot shells. Paying attention to the hulls construction is wise. I'd wait on loading the 1's with the plastic base wad until you find data for that...
