    Long hunter knife

I'm guessing about 75% the cost of a coal or propane forge's worth!! :) Nice work, and I think you captured the spirit of a vital longhunter's tool quite well.

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Is this a typo, something othr than inches, or is yours one HECK of a 45-70 chamber? o_O Actually a serious Q, just asked with "humor." I have loaded some BP 45-70, but compressed with the bullet, so I got nowhere near 80 grains! 70 was a challenge for some of the rounds - but that was most...

Thanks J-Bar! I will look at several of my local Ace stores. I have checked Numrich, ToW, and Dixie, but had forgotten about VTI. I do need to get back on this one. I recently finished an unmentionable restoration that had been lingering for longer than I care to admit! I let it distract me...

The trigger guard screw has yet to make an appearance, so I haven't replaced the guts & tried the action yet. I haven't had a lot of time for tinkering lately, so everything's just sorta sitting for now. I did finally strip & sand the grip panels. Today, while working on matching a replacement...

Range Report, .58 cal smooth bore TC Trapper.

I believe that's called the KamiKaze Load! However, could be very useful if Griz teamed up with Mountain Lion for the attack. For right-handed shooters, the recoil would spin you clockwise and the swingin' muzzle would whack Ms. Stalking Lion in the chops as the ball dealt with Griz.

Well, I hit my first "want of a shoe" moment. After that last progress report, I decided to fit the guts back into the frame and test for function. "Ok," it began "this goes here, and that goes there... Hm. That screw is the trigger pivot, this one is ..." You get the idea. I didn't cheat and...

Range Report, .58 cal smooth bore TC Trapper.

Hypothetically speaking - since I would not be likely to encounter Mr. Grizz here in Appalachia! - I would go with the single .570 ball. Your test seems to show a wide variation in spread between shots. Without extensive additional testing/patterning to confirm the "snake eyes" result is more...

3" 00 Buckshot for Deer Hunting

For those of you not averse to aluminum molds, look into Marty's Arms: https://www.martysarms.com/ I have one for #0 buck, .32 balls, but I haven't used it yet.

Project update! Somewhere within the chaos of daily life, I've managed to make a little progress on the ol' Bulldog. After numerous dips, the trigger guard started looking a little weird... But it cleaned up well enough! The frame developed a few rings around the screw holes that showed up...

Thank you! Do you have recent pics of it? I'd love to see how it's held up. I considered the Birchwood Casey product... but I'd'a had to pay for that! Got this stuff free. 😎 And when I went to pick it up, I got there just in time for some hot action! EDIT: Hey @StrawHat , I see your post...

Oh, one other development. After the second dip & drying, the trigger guard sent me a message. I don't get no respect! 😄😄😄

The Blackening; Part Deux: The results of the 2nd blackening, after etching, were... Outstanding! This time, I did not handle them while wet. I used aluminum wire to pick them out of the solution and hang them up, then let them dry overnight. When dry, they still looked good, but were kinda...

Guess it's been a while since I posted an update. Well, here goes. As mentioned upthread, I want to blacken the brass frame and trigger guard. A friend in the piedmont (NC, not Italy!) happened to have some real brass blackening solution from his family's foundry, and said he'd let me have...

So I went looking for 3/16" brass bar stock to make the cylinder quick-release out of. No luck. Grainger had it, for a great price! (< $9) But they have to deliver it to my local store & estimated ETA is Dec 20. :( It's on its way, but I wanted to work on it sooner. So I got a 3' piece of...

    Information needed on muzzle-load side-by-side (?pre-civil war?)

Nice heirloom! Post this up in the Blackpowder forum (scroll down from the Shotguns Forum); lots of good info there. If you're comfortable disassembling it, you can often find maker's or proofing marks on the underside of the barrels. These can help narrow down its origin.
