HS6 Data Differences in 357 Magnum

I was wondering if anyone had an estimate of what my loads would do from a 4 inch barrel. I too am using the same 158s from MB. I got a really good deal from Summit City Bullets and got 500, same grooveless bullet basically they match up perfectly. Probably using the same mould. Even at 9.2 I...

    Forcing cone erosion?

It is a 357 model 60, everything else looks good on it. I'm hoping the seller will send more pics. I'll probably just skip it at this point, it's not exactly what I was looking for anyway but if I can get a good deal on it I might take it.

    Forcing cone erosion?

Yeah I think I'll send them a message. I'm definitely interested in it but the last thing I need is another problem gun.

    Who needs 357 Dainty?

I wasn't referring to energy numbers, I'm talking about tests of actual performance. The 357 went just as far as the 44 in ballistic gel going through the same barrier. I'll try to find the video I'm talking about. It's kind of like the FBI going back to 9mm, the 40 is bigger and better on...

    Forcing cone erosion?

Thank you all! I thought I'd try to answer everyone in one go. I thought the same thing, we need better photos. I'll ask the seller if they can get me some better pictures. The inside don't look bad but the picture makes it really hard to tell. It's a Smith model 60, there is some wear on the...

HS6 Data Differences in 357 Magnum

Max load per Lyman? See I didn't really have a chance to play with seating depth as my cast bullets all have a crimp groove. I got to the max fairly quickly although at first I was using the 158 RNFP data. Once I realized my bullet was closer to the 358156 and followed that data I noticed I just...

HS6 Data Differences in 357 Magnum

The full wadcutters are softer, the semi wadcutters are harder

    Who needs 357 Dainty?

Is the 44 better on paper? Sure maybe, but the 357 has alot going for it too. The 357 magnum is my favorite caliber and heres why. First and foremost availability and versatility, I rarely ever see 44 magnum ammo on the shelf and I don't think I've ever seen a box of 44 special on the shelf. I...

HS6 Data Differences in 357 Magnum

I almost forgot, this is only for the Hornady 158 grain swaged bullets but a guy I know tested the hardness and found they were 12 bhn. That may be why we have been able to push them to moderate levels. The full wadcutters and other bullets in the Frontier line are around 8 bhn but for some...

HS6 Data Differences in 357 Magnum

Yeah its the frontier bullets, only I was using the non hollowpoint version. I've pushed them pretty far too, using the Lyman data. I didn't have any leading but that was only one cylinders worth of ammo. I felt it was a little too much for the swaged bullets but I've had no issues with them at...

    Forcing cone erosion?

I've been looking for a good used revolver and found one I'm interested in online. I can't tell if it's just the picture or the lighting but does this forcing cone look kind of eroded to you guys?

38 Special in a strong revolver

If I was limited to only 38 special and wanted to push the limits I would definitely go with either the Ruger SP101 or GP100. The 38 special only SP101 is easier to find than the 38 GP100 but they're out there. The Rugers are the only ones I would attempt such a thing in. A 3 inch SP101 in 38...

HS6 Data Differences in 357 Magnum

I actually have a lot of experience with this same issue, the main powder I use in 357 magnum is HS6 and I load mostly 158 grain SWCs. The Hodgdon data is a glorified 38+p load, the 7 grain max is rated at 15,000 psi if that's any indication to how weak that data is. I know a few people who use...

    Replaced my 380acp with a 9mm.

I can't say that I blame you, I sold my Glock 42 to fund a 9mm with more rounds on board. I bought the 42 for pocket carry and while I could pull it off it looked like a brick in my pocket. Started carrying it IWB and I figured if I'm going to carry on my belt it should be at least a 9mm...

Which cartridge is your favorite to reload and why.

Definitely 357 Magnum which I include 38 special as well. 357 is my favorite caliber and it's the whole reason I started reloading. The history of both was always intriguing to me, I really wanted to work up some 38-44 loads but decided against it.

    105 grain 38 special loads

Did you use the start load or the max load or did you go in between? I believe all of the start loads are quoted in the low 800s

    105 grain 38 special loads

The 4th edition Lyman cast bullet handbook has data for the 105 using 231, although I'm not surprised by the unburnt powder. The Lyman book starts at 4.2 grains but I've had some odd results with Lyman data. I'm considering trying a different powder, either titegroup or 700x just not sure when...

    105 grain 38 special loads

I love the Lyman cast book don't get me wrong but I've had some weird things happen with their data. Try 4.5 grains HS6 under a 158 grain bullet and you'll see what I mean. Using 158 grain bullets as an example their data for HS6 starts too low, but their data for Win 231 starts higher than both...

    105 grain 38 special loads

I had the load data already, I'm trying to see if anyone has gone below the 4.2 grain start load with 231 and if so what kind of results did they get. I plan on trying the 4.2 load but I'm also going to reduce the charge and try 3.5 and 3.8 and see what kind of results I get. If 3.5 works for a...

    105 grain 38 special loads

That's always fun to deal with lol I hate when that happens. A few weeks ago I was working up different loads and took about 180 38 and 357 with me. I had to switch and shoot a different gun for a while.
