    german jaeger

jaeger I built the gun for hunting...I sighted in with 85gr ffg and a .010 patched .610 ball. Seems the patches where gas cut so i put 15gr corn meal on top of powder and patch remained intact. Ive had better luck in Colerain bbls with a .600 ball and heavier patch.

    78 caliber rifle

78 caliber The max i've shot the rifle at is 50 yds. I may experiment in the future with longer distance. I wish to keep the charge at 100 gr, for all practical purposes. I would have to increase powder by another 40 or so gr because of trajectory and bullet wt. I tried 140 gr, impact point was...

    78 caliber rifle

78 caliber Riley Smith at Long Hammock barrels. The 30" 10 bore barrel is around 1.150 across the flats, just under a 3/16"wall. The barrel will take a lot, but I used the old method of calculating the charge...1 grain per caliber + 30% more for a hunting charge. I believe most all the powder...

    78 caliber rifle

78 caliber The twist of the rifle is around 1 turn in 84", and all balls were kept inside a 2" target dot at 50 yds, which is the distance i intend to keep all my shots within. I built this rifle with a single set trigger, between a crisp 2.5 lb pull, in combination with the lock sparking so...

    78 caliber hunting rifle

78 caliber Once at a local gun show several yrs back, I saw a jaeger that a g.i. had brought back from germany after WWll. The man sawed the rifle in half about 5" in front of the breech, just to fit in his bag to go home with!!! Shame, cause the gun was in good shape. But I stuck my 6"...

    78 caliber hunting rifle

78 caliber It is rather large, but the great thing about it is the .765 ball has lots of frontal area for knockdown power on big game, and it will retain velocity because of its mass.

    78 caliber hunting rifle

78 caliber rifle It is rifled, .778 land to land, and the grooves .012 per side deep. The overall length of the barrel is 30", and is 1 5/32" across the flats. Recoil was acceptable with the 100gr charge.

    78 caliber hunting rifle

I just completed a 78 caliber hunting rifle built around a Long Hammock barrel, L&R Durs Egg lock, and a walnut stock. The gun is from the later part of the wooden patchbox period, just before the revolution. It has a single set trigger, and the rear sight is much like an early type, but is a...

    early longrifle

That would be an exellent idea, to take some photo's during construction. One thing that you cannot see in the pictures, is the triggerguard, sideplate, and top return of the buttplate were all engraved by my good friend, Mr. Phillip Cravener of latrobe, pa. When constructing my next gun, I will...

    early longrifle

Have been a precision machinist for 20 yrs. Work is slow. I generally build one gun a year, and early wooden patchbox guns are my speciallty. I just ordered a 78 caliber 30" barrel from Riley Smith, of long hammock barrels, to build a boar rifle. Only one gun per year, cause my racing pigeons...

    early longrifle

I wish I could take some close up pictures, but I sold the rifle to the man who got me into building 28yrs ago. I am currently unemployed. Thank you all for the compliments, very touching! I once saw an early Christian Springs rifle, with a very large star in the cheek rest.
