Caliber selection for small frame hunter

A .243 is an effective Whitetail deer cartridge for as far as most are capable of shooting. Easily into the 300 to upwards of 500 yard range with the right ammo. Honestly I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised if it was second to the 30-06 as the most popular deer cartridge. It doesn't...

Caliber selection for small frame hunter

    Look at rifle recoil charts. I would say the cut off is no more than 15 ft-lbs and ideally 10 ft-lbs. 7mm-08 is 14.88. 25-06 is 12.69. 6.5 CM is 11.87. 30-30 is 9.97. 243 is 9.22. 7.62 X 39 is 7.11. 6.5 Grendal is 6.18. 5.56 is 5.48. 300 blackout is 4.02. The Grendal is capable and you...

    First failure

Just how much setback does it take to get into the dangerous range? The one that blew up on me was a 165 Valiant LSWC, 4.5 grains of Bullseye.

    First failure

I had the same thing happen to me a few months back. First time as well. Magazine was a 8 round Mec-Gar with plastic base plate. It was destroyed and likely limited damage. Grips and gun were fine. Like an idiot I kept on shooting. The next day I noticed a nasty bruise/discoloration on my...

    Red dot mounting resource?

a2X4bbl, tell me what you did with the Steyr. Looks like you had the slide milled but by who? Is that a 507C on it? I didn't think there was another M9-A2 MF owner in Florida.

    Heavy 1911 hammer spring?

A trigger shouldn't be hard to cock. A few things influence the range of mainsprings that are suitable. Something in the 17-19# range will likely be right for you (assuming normal 5" government 1911 in 45 acp). If you feel comfortable doing the work I'd replace the pins and the spring in the...

    Trijicon Huron scope options?

I have stayed out of this because I don't have a Huron. FWIW a few months back I ended up buying a .308 when I was looking for a 5.56 (don't ask). So I needed a scope that would be a capable 600+ yard solution. I got influenced by the Rokslide forum and decided I valued durability. At the...

    Rem Oil Use.

I used to think oil was oil. I never use it for cleaning, just lubrication. I used Hoppes a lot as it is thicker than rem oil. I am now using Lucas extreme duty gun oil and I do think it is better. Certainly made a difference on my 1911 trigger. One of these days I'll have to try Mobil One

Looking for an affordable long eye relief scope

I don't know if you consider this affordable. I would think it would add resale value. https://accumounts.com/russian-mosin.html

.410 BBB buckshot for self/home defense

This might be worth looking at. No experience with it. They make it in 2 1/2" also. https://www.aeammo.com/products/winchester-s413pdx1-020892020344-2a5-5666

Handgun, Rifle, PCC, or Shotgun for Home Defense?

Alarm system, surveillance system, motion sensors, motion controlled lighting, better doors/locks, dog(s), perhaps a door at the top of the stairs. In short things to insure the police are on the way, and the kids have moved to my bedroom, prior to bad guys gaining entry (or at least breaching...

    9.3x62 vs .375 h&h

https://www.eurooptic.com/93x62-rifles.aspx https://www.eurooptic.com/375-hh-rifles.aspx The .375 is more versatile. Ammo is easier to come by here. It doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. It you ever make it to Africa the 9.3 won't be legal in most areas. It would be hard to fault...

    Pecar Berlin Rifle scopes

"I'm anxious to learn about the rifles and think they might be some high quality German Mausers." That sounds like a very good possibility. A good scope from the 1950's isn't that good by today's standards. A good rifle from the same time period could be an exquisite masterpiece.

Pros and Cons of .223/5.56 Barrel Material

You kinda need to look at three different things. In no particular order of importance: 1) How is the rifling cut. Your options are cold hammer forged (CHF), cut rifling, and button rifling (there are others but they aren't common). CHF is usually a premium option with longer life (think...

If you could only have 5 handguns?

Every time I play this game I tend to think certain choices shouldn't count towards the limit. For example I think a .22 LR rifle and pistol should be exempt. Ditto on a shotgun. I'm mostly a (2700) target shooter so I need an accurate .22, .38, and .45 handgun. In addition I'd prefer to...

38 Special in a strong revolver

I'll add this FWIW. My gun club doesn't allow "magnum" handguns so I asked my brother to load me up some .38 special loads for my 686 that would be as close as possible to .357 magnum level. He mentioned 38/44 ammo which I was familiar with. The ammo he sent me was too hot for my 686 yet it...

Sweet spot for .22LR rifle value?

I think I fall into the "poor but not cheap" category. I shoot .22 LR NRA prone rifle matches. I actually wanted to shoot 2700 bullseye pistol but my brother called me one day to inform me I had purchased a CMP Remington 40X for $700. So that was that. A few years later a guy at my gun club...

What .308 BA would you buy if you had a $2000 budget for gun and optic?

I bought this for three of our BA .308's. It used to be a little cheaper but I still think it is a great deal. https://www.eurooptic.com/Trijicon-Tenmile-6-24x50-SFP-w-Red-LED-Dot-MRAD-Ranging-30mm-Matte-Black-Riflesc.aspx Tikka and Bergara are popular names to recommend for rifles. Lately...

    One bullet for .41 magnum

"The question I'm asking is whether a hard cast bullet of .410" to .411" diameter will lay a deer low as effectively as a jacketed bullet will." Maybe not but it will still lay a deer low effectively.

    300 WSM 168 TTXS Vihtavuori N150

Just got 8 lbs of the N150. Going to use it for Win 308. Haven't loaded anything yet. Seems like N160 would be better for your needs. The N550 is double base so it is going to burn hotter.
