Will Homemade percussion caps work in cap and ball revolver?

I've been following this discussion and I am interested in trying to make caps for myself. I cannot find anyone on the web who still sells the Tap o Cap. Anyone know how to find one?

Best source of charcoal to make black powder

I live in the CA central coast area, which is justifiably known for its barbecued tri-tip. The wood of choice around here is mesquite charcoal, mostly imported from Mexico. It comes as carbonized pieces of wood, with no additives or processing - great for cooking! Does anyone know how good...

Ivory grips for Colt 1860 open top (Pietta)

This may be a FAQ, but I'm interested in adding a set of ivory (synthetic is OK) grips for my 1860 Pieta that just got back from Goons. Any ideas on sources?

    S&W 625 feedback

I own an older firing pin in the hammer model of 1989 version and I love it. It lost some value for being a 5" barrel since the competitive shooter rules changed to outlaw the 5" barrel - now they are 4" One of the cooler things about the 625 is that they are strong enough to handle 45...

Where can I buy real black powder in CA?

I live in the central CA coast area near San Luis Obispo, having moved here from Southern CA a few years ago. I've recently started playing around with black powder - a Ruger old army and a Pieta 1851. None of my local shops stock any kind of black powder, and the biannual gun show only...

    size differences for 44 balls

I;ve got a Ruger Old Army that I enjoy shooting. If I recall correctly it takes .456 balls, which seems to work fine. I just ordered from Cabelas a Pietta 1860 Army in .44. I gather that this is supposed to take .454 balls. Can I shoot the .456 balls in the Pietta?

A disturbance in the force... I need a new gun, but which? Help me please.

Sorry to be late to jump in on this thread, but I would recommend a S&W 625 loaded with 45 Super. You'd have to reload, but its not hard. Starling has 45 Super brass. There are a lot of 5" 625s out there because the competition guys changed the rules to 4" barrels.

    Vaquero or Blackhawk?

I've got both an old Vaquero and a Bisley Blackhawk in 45 Colt, both with the 7.5" barrels. Love those guns. The Vaquero goes to CASS meets along with my USFA Rodeo II. I'm in the market for another USFA or a Uberti. I've got no experience with the new Vaquero, but they are VERY popular at...

Most powerful commercial loads for old model Vaquero

I've got an early Vaquero in .45 Colt that I bought at a gun show in 2000 for about $250.00. Yes, those were the days, my friend. I also own a Bisley Blackhawk in .45 Colt. I load my own ammo for these guns, and the only downside is keeping the Ruger-only loads separate from SAA loads (I...

What is your best 357 revolver?

.357s are my favorite revolvers. I own these: Dan wesson model 15 pistol pack. Very good but needs work to fix light primer strikes. SW 686+ 6". prelock with hammer mount pin. Sweet - almost my favorite. SW 27 5'. This is my favorite - I just seem to shoot straighter with this one...

    blackpowder signal cannon

Thanks I knew I could get some insight here - thanks to all who replied. I don't know about the Dixie gun works connection, but this cannon does indeed have a charge pocket at the bottom that takes close to 1 tsp of powder. I suspected that more containment would be needed to make a boom...

    blackpowder signal cannon

I'm very new to black powder issues. I bought a Ruger Old Army at a gun show, but have not used it yet. I'm looking forward to having fun. Then I bought the following item on eBay: Vintage Brass Black Powder Signal Cannon - 1 1/8" Inch Opening It came with no instructions. So I...

What knife sharpener should I get?

EdgePro I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the EdgePro fixture. I have very good luck getting knives shaving sharp on this fixture.

    hand loaders

If you are shooting only pistol calibers, I highly recommend the Dillon Square Deal B. It used to be pretty cheap, but prices have risen over the past ten years. They do show up on eBay now and then. Its the entry level for a progressive press, which means you have to keep your eyes open for...

What to do with my old model stainless Vaquero

I've got an old model vaquero that I used to play around with shooting bowling pins with heavy loads. Nothing competition - but it was a good gun for that kind of plinking. Its kind of surplus now - I bought a FA 83 in .454, which I love on those days when my arthritis doesn't bother my...

.44 magnum vs .454 Casull: Which is more popular for bear defense?

I generally reload all of my .45 ACP and .357 ammo. Saves a lot of money on a 200-300 round range session. But I find that my FA 83 in .454 Casull tests my limits to handle recoil. I rarely shoot more than ten rounds during a session. So it isn't really worth it to me to reload - I just...

    Breaking in a barrel?

Handgun cleaned after each outing during and after break in I don't clean my guns more than twice a year - even the Kimber that does 3-4K rounds of .45 ACP reloads a year. A little lube - one of those pull through cleaners every now and then - and thats it. My old Smith 66 gets tight after a...

    .45 Auto - Optics solutions?

I've had an Optima, which is a small red-dot similar to the Docter, on a Kimber for three years - no problems at all. My 50-something year old eyes really appreciate it. I'd say that concerns over beating the sight to death are unjustified. Colima

Dillon Square Deal vs. RL 550B

I've got two SDBs - one for .45 and one for everything else. Overall, they have been extremely reliable and problem free. I have broken a few parts, but the Dillon service is great. I don't think you can beat the SDB set up for .45 only. This is an easy to load cartridge, and I shoot more...

What in the heck is a lanyard for?

When I last visited Paris, the Gendarmes all had revolvers connected to their belts by lanyards. I presume the idea is that bad guys can't grab your weapon and run away with it.
