A Puukko and Some Rocks (otherwise translated as "It's Here!")

I married a comedienne. Today I received a couple of packages, one from New York and the other came all the way from Finland. Inside the box from Finland was a puukko. My wife long ago stopped paying attention to my knives; she thinks they're all pretty much the same. Surprisingly enough she...

    Champagne wishes and caviar dreams...

...or alternatively, "I wish my family wasn't so young so I could buy some expensive shotguns." Although I appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into making fine shotguns, I really wish that they weren't so expensive. I've been doing the responsible thing and saving up for a Beretta Silver...

Which Classic bolt action? Cooper 54 or Sako 85?

I want a bolt action .308. I originally thought I was going to buy a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight, but then ARs came along and sucked up my fun money. I got the chance to handle one recently, and while it seemed to be well-made, it didn't really wow me. So I researched the subject a bit...

    Shotguns as art

I've got it bad. Once upon a time life was uncomplicated. Although I've always been interested in guns, I had simple tastes. As long as I had a couple of good 1911s, a couple of ARs, and a .22lr pistol and rifle I was largely content. (I do lust after a LRB M14 clone though.) This...

First shotgun - Beretta White Onyx Sporter?

Hello. Non-shotgunner here requesting some advice. I've asked a couple of questions in the past regarding luparas, and I have the feeling that I'm going to end up with a CZ Hammer Coach one day. Most of my shooting is done with 1911s, although I also have a couple of ARs and a .22lr pistol...

S&W Model 27 - Performance Center or Classic?

Please enlighten me as to the pros and cons of these two Smith & Wesson Model 27s. I am looking at the Performance Center Model 627 and the Classic Model 27 I know very little about revolvers, but I want a nice .357. I know the Performance Center is a stainless steel, 8-rounder and the...

    Ignorance is bliss.

Or so they say. Before I bought my first gun, I gleaned all my firearms knowledge from television and the movies. The only guns I really knew of were Mel Gibson's Beretta, Dirty Harry's .44 Magnum, as well as the ubiquitous Glock and the gangsta favorite, the Desert Eagle. I also knew of...

CZ 550 Safari Magnum or Winchester Model 70 Featherweight?

If you could only have one, which would you get? I am torn between the CZ Safari Magnum in .375 H&H and the Winchester Featherweight in .308. Truth be told, I will probably get the both eventually, so I guess I should ask which I should get first? As a bit of background info most of my...

Foolish to go hog hunting with a single-shot rifle?

I am a shallow person. I'll fess up to it. I like my firearms pretty, with nice wood, good bluing, and pleasing lines. Most of my firearms are attractive -- 1911, BHP, CZ 452 Trainer. The AR might not have traditional good looks, but even then I still think it looks cool. The only exception...

A fun shoot and a realization

I took a break from the merciless paper targets yesterday and attended a fun shoot at my local rod and gun club. This was my first time shooting non-paper targets and I had a blast. At 25 yards we shot at balloons, charcoal, golf balls, dog biscuits, powder filled Easter eggs, and finished up...

    Hunting wild pigs?

I guess a bit of background info is needed here. I have never hunted. It was not something my family participated in. Truth be told, I don't even know if any of my relatives have ever hunted, and I come from a huge family. For some reason though, I want to shoot for blood. I can't explain...

    CZ Hammer Coach

I'm thinking of getting a lupara. I don't want to spend that much for one, but I still would like to get a good quality piece with exposed hammers. The CZ Hammer Coach looks perfect. It's beautiful and is just about what I am willing to spend. How's the quality of CZ's shotguns? I had a...

    Gaucho-style knife

I recently picked up this knife. It's a gaucho-inspired camp knife. It's a good sized knife at 11" overall length, with 6" of flat-ground cutting goodness. The koa handle has an oval cross section so that I'll always know where the vorpal edge is. I can't wait to put it to work this summer.

    Some of my favorite knives.

I've been a gunny for going on three years now, but I've been into knives for as long as I can remember. Here are three of my favorite matter separators -- a Himalayan Imports M43, a Blackjack Classic 125, and a Schatt & Morgan Harness Jack. With this trio I can pretty much chop, cut, or slice...

    Custom rifle

Check out this WIP (work-in-progress) thread about a rifle that knifemaker Bailey Bradshaw crafted from the ground up. Truly a one-of-a-kind gun. It only took him 7 years and 300 hours to complete. Awesome. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=548100

Teaching the next generation to shoot

My wife and I welcomed a baby girl to our family last month and I find myself looking forward to the day I can bring my daughter to the range. I already have a fine .22lr rifle, the CZ-452 Trainer with the marvelous tangent sights. Do you think this rifle will suffice to introduce her to...

    How expensive are today's firearms...

compared to their historical counterparts? I'm curious because I have the feeling that despite our gripes about the prices of guns, they are probably cheaper (relatively, as a percentage of income) than guns from the past. How much would a Minuteman's Kentucky Rifle have cost compared to his...

    Mid-length or carbine?

Being a firm believer in the "two is one, one is none" philosopy I just ordered the parts for my 2nd AR build. My first AR was a 16" carbine, a mixmaster with a LMT lower and BCM upper and bolt carrier group. I wanted something a little different this time so this time I chose a Noveske 16"...

    Lmt .308 mrp

I was at Border's today and I saw an article on a .308 LMT. I don't remember the magazine, but apparently the gun is scheduled to be released in the first quarter of 2010. It's too bad the article didn't mention the rifle's MSRP. Anybody else seen it? I wonder how much this gun is going to cost.

    Winchester Model 70 Featherweight

Now that I've gotten a carbine I find myself wondering what firearm I should get next. I still have three guns that I need to round out the collection, a bolt action centerfire rifle, a shotgun, and a Springfield M1A. As I already have a semi-auto, I'm leaning towards getting a .308 bolt...
