    Gerber Applegate-Fairbain Folder

I carry the mini-covert A.F. Gerber in my EDC rotation, as 1 of 3 main ones. I haven't put it to any serious use yet, though, so can't comment on it's quality. I like it's size and weight, and how easily it opens, though. This is one with the single edge; not a 2-edge blade.

What Are the Ballistics on the 6.5x55?

Wow, if someone loaded a 6.5x55 case full of bullseye, pulled the trigger, and lived to talk about it, that is truly a testament to the strength of the "weak" 96 action. :what: Lunde....oh my word; now THAT is a rifle. Very beautiful rifle and groups! If anyone here wants to sell a rifle...

What is the most effective guard dog?

The most commonly used dogs for shutzhund and police are ones with good hard bites (powerful jaws), natural protective and aggressive instinct, good obedience/teachability/intelligence, and lots of determination in a fight. Roughly from best on down, some of the most common breeds are: 1...

    Last Time, I swear...FAL Optic

Burris, or the IOR if you need the weight savings. You might want some cranked up power occasionally, and I had a Trijicon accupoint break on me after less than 20 rounds on a .45-70. A Loopy VX3 1.75-6x32mm might ought to be in your list of choices too.

    .243 or .270?

Well, you don't have to spend MORE to get a better rifle - you can spend LESS - the Mossberg 100 ATR and the Stephens 200 - why would you spend more to get a less-well-made 710? Either one of these two will shoot just a good or better than the 710, particularly the Stephens.

    My First Rifle

You have made a very good decision. Now get about 10 different ammo types and test them to see which one shoots best in your rifle. Don't forget to include "Wolf Match Target .22" in your testing - cheap and good.

    Rifle ID please

What other markings are on it? Yes, I think you'd have had serious troubles when shooting it if it was a u.s. 1917 rifle in .30-06, so it's undoubtedly a P14 Enfield. Great rifle.

    .243 or .270?

Yeah, first off, do yourself a favor and get a Stephens 200 or Mossberg 100ATR, if on that tight of a budget. Or for a little more (about the same as the 710), a Savage or Howa. And definitely get the .243 win. It's been killing deer dead for decades, and is much easier on the shoulder...

    talk about long!

Question Why does a 32" barrel advertisement use a picture of a barrel that is much closer to 60" than 32"?

This thread just makes my day. :D Only on THR would peeps be talkin about rifling their spudguns for accuracy! ;)

which 7mm catridge would be the best chocie for elk and deer?

For elk, .280 remington, definitely. Maybe remmag if you're a masochist. For deer, 7-08. For both, gotta run with the bigger one - .280 Rem!

    Does this HD shotgun exist?

you said SBS... Does THIS hit the nail on the head?! http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=212651 Coolest HD shotgun I've even seen, save perhaps a tricked-out tromix Saiga-12, like gazpacho's there. Edit...Oops, nevermind, that's a pump. I had thought it was a semi-auto.

    Decisions, decisions...

The better comparison, in my view is Kel Tec SU-16 (5.56x45) vs. AK-style rifle (either 7.62x39 or 5.56x45 or 5.45x39), for your budget. These two have highly available, inexpensive mags, unlike the Rugers. 1. It's not the round; it's the platform; there is nothing inherently less accurate...

This is why the sheep fear guns!!

Wow, I did not realize Jane Pauley was a master terminal wound ballistics experts...learn something new every day. But we all know she's right about those Black Talons! Now for a cop to say that a bullet goes in the shoulder and out the toe, and that an SKS fires an anti-materiel round - now...

Hills Have Eyes - Gun Question

Well, it made Ebert & Roeper's Worst-of-2006-so-far list Sun night. What's good for the zombies is good for the inbred hillbillies too - AR15.

(TN) Law-abiding citizens turn in firearms to keep them out of lawbreakers' hands

Ha! Can I use that for my sig line, and attribute it to you? Lol. Wonder if granny-no-guns who's down there turning in her hubby's collection since he's finally too senile or tired to stop her, first asked their kids if they needed or wanted them? It's just so sickening. I don't see why...

"Overpenetration" and rifle rounds--the myth that won't die

I'm not necessarily advocating a handgun over a longgun for home defense, but the box o' truth guy proved once and for all that it's the idea that a .223 does NOT penetrate significantly that is the myth, not the other way around. IOW, it does penetrate a LOT. Went through several "walls" worth...

    Deer hunting: 5.56mm, .308, etc...

What OldSchooler said; ditto. Spring for a Rossi ($180) or Handi-Rifle ($220), or Stephens 200 ($270), or Mossberg 100ATR ($245), in .243 or bigger... .308, .270, .30-06, whatever floats your boat. Or grab a milsurp - a K31 Swiss, or Mosin-Nagant of some flavor, or Mauser of some...

    What kind of GPS?

I'd say, if you can afford it, get one that has the radio combined, like the Rhino 130. If you can't look for something on sale like I did. I found one that does everything I want it to do, and a few things that I don't YET feel the need for, but may at some point - it seems like a good...
