The only staggering loads I've done is when I use one of my semiautos for woodswalking. Carry. Then the mag is filled with half jhp and half fmj. Fmjs incase of small game jhp for two or four legged predaters.

I would say 32 H&R mag. For practice you can always go with 32 S&W longs which have little to no felt recoil.

When I took my class the instructer brought 3 22 revolvers and 1 22 semi auto and everyone other than me used at least one of the instructers guns. In my state(MO) you shoot one semi auto and one revolver and it don't matter who owns them.

Go to as many Gunshops that you can and handle all the guns you can. When you are done you will have the best idea of what will work for you. Buy that one. Then look into all the carry options. Somewhere there you will find what works best for you.

Of all listed I chose 44. But I would use it in a rifle and back it up with a 454 or 44 revolver.

I voted 226. No handgun is a guarenteed one shot stopper. Or even a 2 shot stopper. If it takes 3 rounds to put the attacker down and there are 3 or more attackers the 1911 is empty and the 226 still has have a mag. Me myself would never carry a primary sidearm with fewer than 11 rounds.
