I have a few in this caliber. I would have to say the P229 is my favorite followed by, since you say no Glocks, The Sig 2340/2022, The M&P and M&P compact. If you want to know whats available for ammo see HERE for a good thread!
Amen brother!! I have a P229 in .357 sig with almost 5,000 rounds thru it and only one failure to feed. I have had numerous failures to fire.... but then, I have shot 60+ different factory loads ( or factory reloads ) through it - and most of you wouldn't recognize the names of the brands...
STI used to make two - the Infinity and the VIP.... that was years ago. Apparently they will make a model again!!:

A little pricey!!
try picking up a Taurus 24/7 compact or a PT111 to look at. Even a full size 24/7 may fit the bill!! My GF just bought a 24/7 Pro after handling S&W M&P's, Glocks, Keltecs, Rugers ( SR9). The 24/7 felt best to her...

Should I get a 10mm or .45 ACP
Invariably, the 9'ers will jump in and totally derail...

I have two Taurus 669's - zero problems. And I have a 851 ( concealed hammer version of 85 ) - WOW! Great double and single action trigger pull, accurate and reliable!!
My G31 has been awesome!! I have used it to shoot GSSF matches and IDPA. Always suprises me how accurate is is....
