Have you tried shooting it with the larger backstrap. I have to cram my fingers on the gun as well. The larger backstrap help relieve some of that as well as give it a nice tilt so it cut down on muzzle jump.

I personally carry or have near me a 1911 most of the time. I would say go with that, the recoil on the j-frame can get quite intense when firing in defense of your life. I have a j-frame as well and love shooting it for fun but to depend on.
