    Winchester 1866 & 1873 Carbine front sights?

I was thinking about buying one of the Italian replica lever actions for use in CAS. One of the things that I've noticed about the Carbine version of the 1866 and 1873, is that the front sight is now just a vertical extention of the forward barrel band, as opposed to a blade that is dovetailed...

My Marlin Won't Feed Snap Caps

Most likely it's a question of the .38 Special snapcaps not being long enough to cycle in the Marlin's action. This is a common problem, even with real ammo in the 1894C (mine included). Check the overall length, if it's less than 1.48 inches, that's probably the reason. Try some A-Zoom .357...

Power Custom hammer/trigger kits for Ruger single actions?

I'd like to add Power Custom hammer & trigger kits to the Ruger single actions that I will purchase for CAS. I really want the "half-cock indexing" for loading and unloading. But, again the Blue VS Stainless issue complicates my choice. Power custom "blues" the Blue kits to match the factory...

Ruger Vaquero sights for CAS: Blue VS Stainless?

Thanx, Guys! You've been very helpful. Now, I have a follow-up question; about Power Custom hammer/trigger kits, which I'll post as a new thread. Dave.

Ruger Vaquero sights for CAS: Blue VS Stainless?

Looking to get a pair of Ruger Vaqueros to use in CAS. I had planned to go with stainless guns, but now I'm not sure. Considering that alot of CAS matches are out in the sunshine, and the Vaqueros are finished "Gloss Stainless" (to replicate nickel), is anybody having trouble seeing the...

How deep are cylinder stop notches?

Thanx P95! No need to post pics, your description is easy to understand. What got me wondering was a .45 Colt SAA with walls reported as only .063" thick with notches cut top-dead-center on the chambers! If Colt cuts their notches equal to the shallowest ones in your sample (.040")...

How deep are cylinder stop notches?

Considering how thin the cylinder walls are on some revolvers, has anyone ever measured how deep the stop notches are? Do they vary in depth between manufacturers: Colt, S&W, Ruger, etc.? Between models: SAA, Python, 66, 629, Redhawk, Blackhawk, etc.? I'm not trying to start the old...

    .36 cap & ball for CAS ?

According to the SASS handbook: "Although . . . . . . .36 caliber cap and ball pistols are legal, they may not be powerful enough to handle all reactive targets." I've also read that reactive targets are being used more and more in CAS. Anyone having trouble knocking over targets with...

    whitworth Repros??

Yup, English Parker Hale barrels assembled into Italian locks & stocks. I believe they also make a model called the "Volunteer" that looks like a Whitworth, but features .451 caliber "Alexander Henry" rifling; for those who don't want to be bothered by using those "silly 6-sided bullets."...

    Different ML barrel profiles...why?

And then there are the "swamped" octagon barrels, on some original guns and some modern custom muzzleloaders. They are octagon for their whole length, but taper from the breach to the middle and then get thicker again toward the muzzle. Swamping was/is done to reduce weight compared to a...

    At least I admit it

We've all done it. The suggestions about tricklin' some powder in thru the drum or using a blast of CO2 are good ones. But, they'll probably only work, if the ball isn't ALL THE WAY DOWN against the breach plug. There has to be at least some room left BEHIND the ball for the powder or gas to...

Test results of .357 Mag ammo

Maybe someone has some high-speed experience from a old .357 Remington MAXimum? or By firing some hot .357 loads out of a 18-20" carbine barrel? or By firing some .357 bullets handloaded into a .35 Remington rifle?

Blackpowder season not necessarily a throwback

The in-lines have corrupted the sport so much, that they should do away with the special muzzleloading season. We should just have; "deer season". I'll still carry my civil war musket or my custom flintlock and all those in-lines will be gone, because their owners will go back to their 7mm...

Test results of .357 Mag ammo

Didn't a 125 grain .357 load "win" the Strausburg(sp?) tests ??? (timed incapacitation of big goats that were shot in the chest for a controlled simulation of living human targets) and Aren't a lot of LE agencies (including the Secret Service) switching to the .357 SIG (125gr @ 1350fps)...

    35 Remington vs 30-30 Winchester.

I'll second Jim Keenan's comments. I HAD a Marlin 336 in .35 Reminton. There were problems with misfires due to the tiny shoulder that the .35 headspaces on. Also, finding ammo wasn't a problem, as long as I shopped in BIG stores in BIG towns. Now, I HAVE a Marlin 336 in .30-30...

Post Picks of your Taj MaDeerstand

Or, you could go out to the local slaughterhouse, drive around back by the holding pens, point your monster-magnum out the window, and blast a cow. You don't even have to get out of the truck. Then, go back home and watch football until they call you to come pick up your wrapped meat. Beef...

Lightweight walking rifle for woods and varmints

What do I actually "woods walk" with? Usually, a Marlin 1894C in .357 magnum, if deer are a possibility. But if you tell me there is actually a pack of feral dogs running around, then I'll carry my M-1 Carbine, with 2 extra 15-rd magazines of 110gr JHP's in the stock-pouch.

    357Mag Rifles.. Recoil?

I put 65 rounds of assorted .357 magnum ammo and another 10 rounds of .38 Special through my Marlin 1894C today. With regular .38 ammo, it does indeed remind me of a big .22, a bit louder perhaps, but not much recoil. (I haven't tried it yet, but I'd bet that some of those .38 "Cowboy" loads...

    .260 or 7mm-08.

The .260 is the better cartidge, and here's why: If you're looking for the MOST power from among the calibers based on the .308 case, then get a .308, and then buy some "Light Magnum" ammo to shoot in it! But, that's not the point of the .260 or the 7mm-08. They were developed to get...
