    New toy needs a scope

Nikon now makes a rimfire model in 3-9 x 40 that would be a good all round scope. It'll be on the large size but decent in both areas. For squirrels a fixed 4 power Nikon .22 scope is as good as it gets. For pure target then a 14 power or higher makes a big difference. gideon

    Looking for a pocket gun

Many good suggestions but I'll give you my 2 cents after years of looking for the optimal pocket gun. 1st choice if I was big enough and with big enough pockets: Kahr PM9 blackened slide with night sights 2nd choice If I was bigger; S&W 642w/out a lock 3rd choice and what I actually...

    Ruger SP101 8-Shot 22lr

They should make this as a conversion model that comes with a cylinder for .22 mag. But then they'd be canabalizing business from their own new model Single Sixs.... Gideon

    Springfield Armory Milspec

Had it and it's a great gun but if you've every even thought you'd like a 1911 with some of the other accessorys like a beavertail, extended safety, etc. then I'd recommend you at least look at the "loaded" SA. It's a more money for a LOT more gun. Lot's of folks will say to get the...

    Walther P22 - Recommendations

Well, I have to jump in here. Very few semi .22's will fit a childs hands like the P22. Mine would jam here and there but never once with CCI mini-mags. It simply loves those and I've shot thousands of them through it and it's as tight as it was the day I got it. The sights are easy to...

    Dot sights

For day time, well lite home defense scenarios, any sights you can acquire quickly and have a lot a practice with are likely to be good, however, as in the case of most SD scenarios, I doubt we'll use our sights and will end up point shooting. For night time SD, you really need a good...

Does It Exist? A Budget 22 LR Revolver w/ A Good DA Trigger

I don't think so....not unless you get a real good deal on a used gun....sorry Gideon

Do you conceal carry with the gunbelt/holster against your skin or against clothing?

Almost exclusively IWB, strong side at 3:00 or just ahead of it, serious cant and I always wear a T shirt under it. Can't stand to have the handle of a gun touching skin :scrutiny: I like OWB for ultimate comfort but need a thicker cover garment and decidely longer one at that to cover past...

    Colt Defender Series 9mm

Don't own one but all you hear about the Defenders are good things. The only thing that's kept me from buying one is the way the frame is one color, the slide another. They have an alloy frame and stainless slide so the two different materials contrast a great deal. I just don't like that...

    The versatile lever action.

I agree in so much as I LOVE a good lever action, however, I find them noticeably less accurate then any of my bolt actions but not enough to make a difference for the way I hunt. I think the 30/30 round is decent enough, but for me, my one and only lever is a Marlin 1894C chambered in .357...

Mini 14 or SKS for Self Def

Depends on what you mean for SD? I personally would favor the Mini-14 over the SKS any day of the week but wouldn't like either for in the house SD. I've shot both and feel the mini is better made; an all round better rifle. Gideon

    Rock Island 1911

I have two; a mid-size (4" barrel) and I just picked up a compact (3.5") Haven't fired the compact yet but my mi-size has been 100% including JHP's. Accuracy is good, etc. I've carried the mid-size a lot so the park finish is starting to wear on certain edges from the holster but that's norm...

    P22 or Buckmark?

I have both. For nothing but plinking either is perfectly fine. Here are my observations: P22: -fits the hand nicely -not as accurate as the Buckmark, not even close -Reliable all the time with CCI Mini-Mags; with other ammo it just depends but when I started shooting CCI Mini-Mags it...

    What is .410 good for?

Add a red dot to an H&R single shot .410 youth and you have the perfect squirrel gun for a young child. It's safe, easy to observe and control their ammo. Easy for them to load. Low recoil. Red dot helps the aiming and the multiple pellets is a bit easier to hit with then a .22. Teach them...

    Shotgun no good for HD?

small confined areas that you "have" to go into may be better handled with a pistol and light. If you have more room a shotgun excells. Muzzle blast doesn't do anything but give away a soldiers general postion to the enemy or ruin night vision. In my house my kids (6) are spread out...

    What Pocket Gun(s) to add?

Kahr P380. Best trigger of any of the pockets. No safety (shouldn't be one on a pocket gun :scrutiny:), real sights, locks back after last round, quality made, same manual of arms if you're running one of it's brothers like the P9, K9, or MK9 which is a good idea. Same manual of arms as a DAO...

    Recommend Deer Rifle

Remington 700 chambered in 7mm-08. Will handle all of that and I found it to be an extremely accurate gun. I bought the mountain version which is light weight. It's accurate for the first several shots and then the pencil tapered barrel heats up. The regular version doesn't do that but for...

    How do suppressors work?

Some of the ignorance displayed in this thead is scary. A quick search will give you the answer. To think anyone would think the bullet would ever touch any part of the suppressor  Car muffler, disruption of sound waves, etc. A suppressor simply baffles the sound waves being produced...

    Old fart eyes

Bad eyes too at only 49. I wear progressive lenses. For pistols I only shoot at 7-10 yards practicing defensive shooting techniques. I gave up long range pistol shooting a long time ago. For handgun hunting (Squirrels), I found fiber optic sights are okay but not as good as optics...

    Ruger SP-101 What's the deal ?

Must be hard up for a thread. If you don't like it, why ask people to convince you otherwise? You like it or you don't. If you don't like the base gun then you won't like it if you change things. By the way, dimensionally it's not really any different than a standard S&W J frame. It is...
