I've mainly used .308 and .270, but will be carrying a .243 this year for the first time.

There are more expensive, more modern rings out there, but Leupold rings (IMO) are quality made. My main experience with Leupold rings have been with the standard and dual dovetails, but I do have one rifle with the weaver style Leupold's and they hold just fine.

I own a 1985 BAR in .308, but I'm not an expert. I just loaded one shell, and it ejected without issue, and the bolt did lock back.

I agree with DaisyCutter, and gtscotty. I've owned a BAR in .308 since 1986, and it has been 100% reliable. I'd suggest a BAR in a magnum caliber, but since you don't want that, get the .30-06 and worry about a dangerous game caliber when/if that ever happens.

Hunted deer for 45 years, but never owned a .243. That has recently changed with the purchase of a Howa in .243...can't wait to hit the woods with it this fall.

There are scopes designed to springers, and I believe centerpoint makes some for that task. The problem I had were with rings slipping, so I ended up going back to irons.
