    .44 mag Alaskan=silly

Yes, I understand the Alaskan is also chambered in 454 Casull, and that's a sensible gun. But the .44 Mag is, as an afterthought, looking ill-advised from where I stand. Wanting one? Hell, I want one, too. It's a nice gun. And I realise arrows work well on animals, especially if shot at...

    .44 mag Alaskan=silly

Sorry, I'm not trolling, just wanted to point out the Ruger Alaskan .44 Mag looks pretty silly as a bear-stopper. When the barrel of such a gun is shortened, the ballistics suffer, and the one I am talking about only has a 3" barrel or less, so I'm sure the gun isn't pushing a 240gr bullet much...

    .44 mag Alaskan=silly

Hey guys, I was looking at the guns at the local hardware store a few days ago, and I thought they had --at first glance--a really big, bad-ass revolver. It's a stainless Ruger .44 mag Alaskan gun. The frame is huge, almost like the S&W X-frame, and it's billed as 'Alaskan', with about 3" of...

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

Redhawk, Does your 460 mag show any flame cutting? Does the forcing cone show much pitting? How many rounds have you touched off through it? (The one you use the most, I assume it's a pc model, the only one you have left?) Do you just plink with it, or what? I have figured my reloads at...

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

I stand appreciative of the previous post. Thanks for your words of caution and your valuable experiences. For the record, the only shells that became stuck in my new 460 were ones I purposely loaded to 53 grains in the 460 round, 23gr in the 45 colt, and 48 grains in the 454 casull...

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

Yes, it's a really heavy gun...and even the super blackhawk .44 mag I have is really heavy for hiking. But I suppose if I were to go to Alaska, I'd be happy to take the big gun, just in case. 460 Weatherby is an awesome gun...8,000 foot pounds of kinetic energy, wowsers. A herd of...

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

P95Carry, Wow, that's a lot more wear than anything I've seen...and even though the angle of the shot does not allow for viewing the forcing cone clearly, I can still see it's much more worn than mine. I suppose it's to be expected. And surely these components can be replaced---for a price...

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

And, BTW, if anyone here has a 460, take it to a 5/16" steel plate at 25 yards, pop a 454 casull round at it, and then try the hornady 460 200gr bullet. It will open your eyes to the answer to the question that started this thread. 454 casull vs. 460S&W? No contest. period. 454 casull is a...

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

Thanks for that. I will try him. One thing that I have noticed that gives me pause is the erosion of the face of the forcing cone. It is pitted and worn, and badly. Brand-new gun, and I didn't notice this until yesterday. Thoughts?

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

I know there is a way to examine the cylinder with infrared or ultraviolet to determine if there are stress cracks in the steel. But I am not certain where to go...I could surely find out, given the power of the net. When the shell has expanded to fit tightly in the chamber, you have gone too...

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

454, I have seen you respond with sanity to all things casull. However, casull didn't make 460. I guess (educated) that I am the one willing to push the xOMGTABMFOvr. You seem like a very very safe-player. Is there anyone willing to play beyond safe? come on down

    SRH .454Casull or .460 S&W????

I don't know the meaning of careful. I am trying to push the limits. There is no room for timidity. The 454 Casull is a wimp compared with the awesome 460 X-frame, hands down. It can't be loaded nearly as hot; it bounces off steel plate the 460 punches right through. The debate is over.

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

I took several guns down to a place by the rio grand between taos and espanola within sight of the massive jemez volcano today with a friend, and the 460 with my 50gr handloads...and a few hotter, at 53gr lil gun. I am a bit wary of this wheelgun, because it's so dam powerful, and...

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

I took the 460 out to pop some rounds today and while doing so, I used a pine tree to sort of steady my gun while I slowly squeezed the trigger...the tree was on the right side, and when she exploded, the blast gas escaping from in between the forcing cone and the cylinder blasted the bark loose...

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

I have a question for you guys with more reloading experience than I have: I started out with a pound of Unique powder, and was told in a sort of off-hand manner that it's not the right powder. Can someone explain why this powder is wrong? Why does it expand the cases more than Lil' Gun? I...

    SRH .454Casull or .460 S&W????

I now have dies for my .270 win, my Colt and Casull, and dies on the way for the 460 XVR. I'm excited to say the least, and I have taken the above advice to heart and I am reading the manual all the way through. First, the manual deals with all the guys who actually invented various calibers and...

    SRH .454Casull or .460 S&W????

Thanks...Obviously I am new to reloading. It would sure be a shame to ruin my new gun by stretching the cylinder. I just picked up your post now, not ten minutes after I loaded a Casull cartridge so hot I had a hard time getting it out of the cylinder. But I put less than 30 grains in it...

    SRH .454Casull or .460 S&W????

No recent activity on this thread, but here goes... I actually found this thread while searching for information on the 460 XVR, and it played a part in my decision to buy one. I have several other guns, and have been shooting since I was a kid. Like most men, I like more power. You know...

Just how powerful *IS* the .460 S&W Magnum?

Hey, guys, I am new here...I have been lurking a little bit for a week or two. It took me about a week to do enough research to make the decision to buy a new 460 XVR. I have owned a .44 mag for a long time, and various rifles and pistols and I'm an arrow shooter, too. I was aware of the...
