    Safely Unloading Semi-automatic Firearms

The only safety that works all the time is between the ears of the gun handler. Depending on a pin, sear, or transfer bar will eventually leave you with an AD or worse. Magazine safeties are OK but don't depend on them. Use your mark one eyeballs and empty the chamber after removing the...

    What are the "cowboy" calibers?

The so called .45 short colt was actually a .45 Schofield. It was a tad shorter than a .45 colt but could be fired in a colt. The .45 Colt could not be fired in a Schofield. The U.S. army bought a lot of .45 Schofield cartridges because of the interchangability with the .45 Colt. A lot of...

What To Do As We Get Older?

I'm 72 and still shoot centerfire and muzzleloaders. I am not as accurate as I once was but I did get a .178 5 shot group last week with my .223. It weighs 14 lb unloaded bur I only shoot it from the bench or bipod. I am facing open heart surgery in the near future so I may not be able to go...

Reloading .45 Colt with black powder.

Lee Mold for .45 LC. 230 Gr. RNFB. Lube with your favorite lube. I use Paraffin, bees wax, and Crisco melted together and hardened in the fridge. fill the case to the top and compress with the bullet. Shoots great, doesn't overstress the gun. You will have to clean the bore after 2...

    Why Wood?

It started in the early days of guns. Iron was expensive, Steel was scarce and VERY expensive. Harder to work and requiring expensive and scarce technology. Wood was everywhere, cheap and requiring nothing more than chisels and knives to work. Metal working needed forges, anvils, hammers...

Anyone else feel a deminished interest in cartridge guns?

I find that I am beginning to lust after a (choke, gasp) smoothbore musket. How's that for retro thinking? I was thinking about my Grandfather who brought a herd of sheep from Illinois to California in the 1840's. I'll bet he had a smoothbore of about 70 to 80 cal. It makes sense because you...

Anyone else finding it just too ridiculously hot?

    marlin 336

I've had a 336 in .30-30 for almost 50 years now. It's as tough as any rifle I've ever seen. Mine has been my jeep gun and saddle gun on so many hunting trips I can't count 'em. I have never lost an animal that has been shot with it. I also have a 1895SS in .45/70 that is my survival rifle...

    improvised patches

Yes, I just squeeze a glob of bore butter into the muzzle before I put the ball in. Seems to work well, doesn't seem to affect the powder and leaves soft fouling in the bore. Whatever works!

    Minies for my Hawken?

Thanx for the replies gentlemen. I haven't had a chance to shoot for a while. I was hit in the ankle by a steel blade flying off a weed eater. Got infected and I have been out of action for a while. The Hawken has a 1:48 twist. I shot round balls and the Lee R.E.A.L. bullet and the...

    Minies for my Hawken?

I recently got a Lee Mould for .50 Cal. minie balls. Has anyone ever used these in a sidelock rifle? I have a Hawken replica circa 1990 (Uberti?) Do they fly good?

    improvised patches

the old timers used unbleached muslin for patches as it was commonly available and not too expensive. I have pillow ticking and mattress ticking in various thicknesses from .017 to .024. I got it from a fabric store (Joanne's). I load the powder, then I put a glob of bore butter in, then...

    Clean Gun = Bad

Cleaning weapons in the military is as much about discipline as it is about maintenance. In the black powder days cleaning was necessary to forestall corrosion and retain accuracy. Today, with the advent of practically corrosion free powders, primers and jacketed bullets, cleaning is not as...

Oh, no! New TV Gun Show Season

I think the show is enjoyable in a limited sense. Will seems to be a guy who has made a going concern out of a hobby and is delighted with the result. I don't have a problem with the guns they play with, but I would like it if they did focus on the legal hassles they have to put up with. This...

    Shooting just for fun?

I wasn't going to offer a reply to this but I can't resist. I find myself judging others according to me. My likes, dislikes, talents, shortcomings. I think we all do to a certain extent. My point is that while I am old (72) and came up with bolt, lever, slide action guns, I do like the...
