    Lock Trouble

Actually not so much degenerated to pistols but a simple medical issue that makes it harder to enjoy a hobby. Though I've admittedly had a soft spot for the STI. Fortunately, it's not a sell-off to cover medical expenses but rather a "it was a fun ride" sell-off which will no doubt finance...

    Best combat revolver?

Best combat revolver? Whoever said "oxymoron" nailed it. They're plenty adequate but arguing over which is "best" is akin to taking sides in the "buggy whip wars". Before anybody piles on, please note the "They're plenty adequate" part.

2nd in two weeks (Out of Control)

Until you've witnessed (you don't have to fill them out yourself) multiple ATF "more than one handgun" forms you're just a wannabe. ...not that there's anything wrong with that. This is what you're looking for: http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-3310-4.pdf Fill out 6 or 8 of...

    Lock Trouble

So, I come back after what I believe is a long spell to see the lock issue is alive and well. I am, however, pleased to note that the issue seems to have boiled down to one of practicality rather than politics -- the pejorative "hillary hole" seems not to have occurred or, more likely, I simply...

S&W "Hillary Holes" and MIM parts...

Always a pleasure, Old Fuff. I've been addressing a few other hobbies but I can't stay away too long. The ATF interim 2009 report grabbed my interest as it shows a 26% bump in revolver numbers vs. 16% in pistols. Of course, that's domestic production so if Glock benefited from the 2009...

S&W "Hillary Holes" and MIM parts...

I expect we'll never know. Even if everyone that swore them off bought six to ten a year if they totally reformed I'm not sure it would make a dent. It sounds like there's more of us than there is through what I believe is called "internet echo effect" but it's you, me, Old Fuff and the...

S&W "Hillary Holes" and MIM parts...

Where are they hearing "no"? I'd guess they're hearing "no" from internet fora. However, internet fora don't buy new guns so why should they care? In modern revolvers the disconnect between what people say they want vs. what they buy has been immense. It's been a while since I've posted...

    Reliability: Revolver vs. SemiAuto

Sure it does. It means that a blanket statement that revolvers have fewer parts doesn't comport well with mathematics. The parts are still there whether one chooses to deal with them or not. Note that I'm not saying that having more parts compromises a revolver's reliability. I'm merely...

    Reliability: Revolver vs. SemiAuto

The GP-100, as I understand it, benefited from a "clean sheet of paper" design that gave us the six series. I'd concur it's probably more applicable as a comparison against a modern service semi-auto. But it still has a bunch of moving parts, perhaps somewhat more than a current service...

    Reliability: Revolver vs. SemiAuto

An admirably balanced and civil thread. However, this just isn't so: Go to Brownell's or egunparts and check out a few schematics. My personal conjecture is that the widespread misconception that revolvers have fewer moving parts is roughly related to why some folks believe an...

Need input for custom 1911 grips

If you're into something a bit different, try ordering 1911 grips from half way around the world. This guy has gotten superlative reviews on this forum: Kimson

Why do I shoot soooo much better with revolvers?

Poor selection of semi-autos? ...< looks around ... yup, we're in general handguns, I don't have to worry about ruffled feathers ... > Semi-auto triggers differ greatly among themselves. Compare a DAO plastic service pistol with a tuned 1911-ish sort of thing and you'll find, in the...

    I've Been Unfaithful

Feel no remorse. You can borrow my rationalization: sometimes pistols with plastic enable revolver purchases. Seriously. I had nothing but semi autos until one day I found one that suited me perfectly. The holy grail, having been found, killed the compulsion to buy more semi autos...

    .308 is $.37 a round @ AIM surplus

I've found the issue to be confusing and I don't see clarity looming on the horizon. The SAAMI specs of 62,000 psi for the .308 are shown as maximum average chamber pressure. This is approximately 430 mPa. Mirex figures for 7.62 NATO show 344 mPa as average chamber pressure. Approx 50,000...

A gun shop episode that left a bad taste in my mouth...

Perhaps there was a BATman in the backroom? I've had at least two dealers state emphatically that personal transactions can't legally occur on an FFL's premises - these were cases when I was buying from his or one of his employees personal collection. We went to the parking lot. I haven't...

Need an accurate and moderately powerful air pistol

Get one of these (GRT-III): http://www.charliedatuna.com/ ...and slip it into one of these: http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Gamo_Whisper_Classic_with_Nitro_Piston/1972 or similar. Good fun.

How much better were P&R S&W revolvers, if at all?

Time for an old Dfariswheel quote that I bookmarked: Admittedly, from 2002 but probably as valid as in 1952.

How much better were P&R S&W revolvers, if at all?

I would be hesitant to use P&R as an indicator of quality if for no other reason than it, in and of itself, doesn't distinguish the firearms that everyone waxes poetic over from those produced during darkest Bangor Punta. This is not to say that BP era firearms blew chunks - most, perhaps...

    586 locked up

I thought primer unseating during firing was normal. Recoil against the breachface re-seats it. Seemed plausible as the primer is only held in by friction. And, if memory serves, "primer only" wax bullet loads will routinely tie up a revolver - hence the reaming of the case for type 209...

    Young people laugh at revolvers?

Interesting that this would turn up in "general handguns". In the revolver forum there lives a thread along the lines of "us older guys prefer revolvers" which is sporadically but inevitably necromanced every so often: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=451404&highlight=older...
