    Hybrid rifle slings?

In the course of my rifle usage, I've used the plain padded hunting style carry strap. They work pretty well for carrying a rifle to a tree stand, or the like, but aren't great for keeping a rifle at the ready, or as a shooting aid. I've used GI style cotton web loop slings. Tolerable for...

How far do you usually shoot your handguns?

At the indoor range, I do the majority of my shooting at 50'. (It's a slow fire only range, so the best practice available is the full distance.) Outdoors, it depends what I'm working on. Might be contact distance, might be 50 yards or more. Defensive practice is usually 7-10 yards.

    Heaviest weight for ccw

I carried a 5" 1911 for a long time. Now it's a steel frame commander, but that's more because the shorter gun doesn't pinch the cheek like your least favorite maiden aunt when you sit down, than about the weight.

    Grab and go gun

Yep. Here lately, when just working around in the barns or yard, rather than going anywhere, I just slip my P32 in my pocket. It gets in the way a lot less than my "out in the world," guns. (Steel Commander, or Model 10.)

    S&W Model 1950

Smith could definitely build lovely guns when they put their mind to it, then. I've got a Model 14, made in 1959. It's the K Frame cousin of the 1955, and a beautifully fit and finished revolver.

Are you prepared to shoot weak handed?

Man, that had to have been scary, riding that thing down. Sorry to hear it. Being injured is never any fun. In my case, the question is "which hand is the weak hand?" I'm right handed, and shot that way for years, until an incautious moment with an impeller pump took off the tip of my...

Colt 1911 Gov't vs... Everything Else

I've owned two Colts, a Springfield, two Tauruses, (Tauri?) an Argentine Sistema, a Ruger CMD, and an STI. Of those, I still own the STI, for USPSA Single Stack (it's the best 1911 I've ever shot, and that includes several Wilsons, an Ed Brown, and a Clark Custom,) and the Ruger as a carry gun...

    Original Blued 5.5 Ruger Redhawk

A Redhawk has been number two or three on my "to buy," list for a long time now. I keep never getting around to it, though, as something else keeps creeping in at #1.

    Bisley vs plow handle

I had a pair of Bisley Vaqueros in .44 Mag for about ten minutes. Maybe I'd been shooting my Super Blackhawks too long by that point, but they felt... foreign, sort of unnatural. Pinky under, and smooth grips on a dragoon size plow handle, that's the ticket for me. The Vaquero sized plow...

On The Topic of Back Up Guns

I'd also like to pick up a hammerless J- frame, or the like, as a coat pocket gun. (Though this year, I think I wore a real coat only a few times, so that may not be the most pressing need. )

On The Topic of Back Up Guns

I've carried a BUG at different times. For a while, years ago, when I was in and out of shady industrial areas, and even sketchier truck stops every day, I was carrying two 5" 1911s, one on either side. At other times, I carried a 1911 on one side, with a P32 in the other side hip pocket. Here...

I keep going back to it....

Why would I skewer you? It's your tail you're protecting, not mine. Do that how you like. Would I carry like that? Nope. But that's not what we're talking about.

What do you prefer: Smith & Wesson, Ruger, or Colt Revolver style cylinder release?

Shooting as a right-hander, I had a strong preference for the S&W Style. Now, shooting as a lefty, I find there's not much difference between S&W and Ruger. I break my shooting grip and retract the pistol to about belly button height, left thumb pushes in and forward, while the right thumb...

    Non-Colt SAA Pattern Revolvers

I remember my Super Blackhawks did that, too. I basically had to hold the cylinder in the loading position for each chamber, as the "at rest" position was too far past to load. The other curse inducing habit of the Ruger action was that if one didn't quite make it to full cock, the hammer...

    Non-Colt SAA Pattern Revolvers

In my experience, shooting sass matches fairly aggressively from 2005 to 2014, it broke down along these lines: Rugers were the primary choice of the competitors, do to strength and durability. The Metallurgy was good, and with the modern coil springs, there was less to break. The Italian Colt...

    Do you find accuracy fun?

I "came of age," as a shooter, that is, really learned to shoot, in cowboy action competition, which is all about high speed on steel, at close range. When I decided to cross train in USPSA, it was a revelation. They had paper targets, with scoring rings and all, out farther than I was used to...

.357/.38 Uberti Cattleman and Winchester 1873 Rifle ammo

The biggest consideration is to use a flat point bullet in a tubular magazine. With the tip of the bullet pressed against the primer in front of it, no pointiness need apply. Beyond that, I don't think I can help you much; when I was shooting those sorts of guns all the time, it was with...

    Revolver Double Action Trigger Pull

That reminds me, in his book "No Second Place Winner," Bill Jordan talks about 15-20 lb double action triggers as if they were the normal thing.

    Up the sleeve derringer

I remember as a teenager trying my best to figure a way to strap a knife to my forearm, but never had any luck. That's tender skin, and a big chunk of steel is pokey.
