    30-30 Ammo

Welcome to ammo buying during a global viral pandemic, economic recession and presidential election year!

Theoretical long-range rifle on a tight budget. Difficulty: Left-hand. Hunting use irrelevant.

RENT. With the ammo included, the rental is costing you $100. Go to the class, learn all you can, decide if this is something you want to do or not. It may save you hundreds or thousands of dollars to go learn some things without the commitment of buying into a rifle setup before you know...

    A good hunting/target rifle

The 6mm cartridges are plenty capable of killing deer and antelope at 200 yards. I don't think you'd go wrong with a .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creed, 7mm-08 or .308 Winchester. Since it sounds like you don't reload, I'd suggest limiting your search to calibers like these that will be easy to find...

    Equivalent target size calculation

I couldn't find a stated width for the scoring portion of the E target. I found a picture of one on an Amazon ad that gave the width of the entire target and scaled it from the product photo. *shrug*

    Equivalent target size calculation

Put your 20" wide steel at 28m to approximately equal the scoring portion of the M9 qual target at 25m.

LimbSaver Grind to fit....I'll never get my shop clean

I just did a grind to fit in the home shop too. There's a reason the Limbsaver setup is a grinder on a pedestal in the middle of a room, surrounded by plastic sheet hanging from the ceiling, and their technician only goes in there with a tyvek suit on. What a mess. But the WD40 is a must-have...

When using a co-witness red dot, do you ignore the front sight?

DukeConnor gets it. When using irons, focus on the front sight. When using an RDS, focus on the target. Lower 1/3 or absolute cowitness is user preference.

    Grumpy old man...

I think a lot of people asking about powder recommendations are looking for groups. And I think most people know that every gun is a little different and what works in one might not work well in another. But there’s more to a powder than how it shoots. How consistently does it meter? How...

Check Weights for smaller beam scales?

You can save yourself a fair bit of change if you're willing to convert from grams to grains. This set and others like it go for $12 on Amazon versus $40-60 for the Lee or RCBS sets in grains. In the calibers I reload for, my needs are met with a 1-20 gram check weight set I got for under $7...

    Ruger 10/22 in NY?

No, it does not. The Ruger spec sheet for the rifle will say "threaded barrel with 1/2"-28 thread pattern" or similar if it comes with a threaded barrel.

    Ruger 10/22 in NY?

A quick visit to the Ruger website shows they have 60-70 current models of .22LR chambered 10/22. Some have threaded barrels, some don't. I don't know NY laws, so I can't say which are NY legal or not, but there are lots of options out there and I'm sure you can find one to your liking if the...

How do you store your long guns?

I don't have this problem, but if I did I think I would just store them in the safe disassembled, if practical to do so.

    AR 10 FTE

I think we've found our smoking gun. The simplest hypothesis is often the best one. I'd forget all about buffers, springs and gas blocks until you have a chance to go shoot this gun wet. What to use for lubricant is its own can of worms and I'm not going to get into it. Just use *something*...

    AR 10 FTE

Did you clean and dry the gun for the photos, or is that the condition you fired it in? If that's how you were trying to fire it, put some lube in there and try again. Machines with moving metal parts don't tend to like being bone dry.

    Sons New .06

Fine looking rifle. Now do that young man a favor and get him some lower scope mounts. I'm guessing those are so high because they're see-thru for the iron sights, but that really puts him at a disadvantage when using the scope. Rings like the Leupold QRWs will let you mount the scope low...

old rifle chamber on new barrel

AR-15 barrel extensions are torqued to the barrel at 150 ft-lbs. Once assembled, the chamber is finish reamed to establish headspace. Then the bore and chamber are chrome-lined if called for. Then proof load is fired. Then the gas port is drilled, indexed to the barrel extension. Is it...

    What make is this rifle?

Measure a chamber casting to determine the caliber. Guessing could be potentially dangerous.

    Rifle for moose

Opinions on terminal ballistics aside; if your guide can't get you within 150 yards of a moose, you need a new guide. Get a heavy bonded or solid copper bullet for that .308 and practice until you can empty the gun into a paper pie plate every time, no misses. Follow up shots on moose are a...

AR-15 owner in need of some advice.

Shoot it until you wear it out. If you ever reach that point (most never will), the cost of any replacement barrel you choose will be me minor compared to the cost in ammo it took wear it out, and will take to wear out the next one.

Light weight “chassis” style precision hunting rifle?

Have not used one, but they're pretty popular among the membership of a mountain hunting forum I frequent.
