Thick and heavy are your friends when it comes to reloading benches. Another thing you might consider is a solid core door either new or repurposed. It simplifies the carpentry needed. Think about mounting the press along the short end. That way the length of the bench is resisting the uplift.
Since you are just playing around, glue one of the small levels on the board and thread a bolt through the left end so you can adjust the board so it always starts out level.
Have you considered using a solid core door for the top? This could limit the bench length to 80". I wound up mounting my 550 to the end of the bench where the span between 4x4s is only about 2-1/2 feet. This short span plus the weight of the bench extending away from the press makes for a very...
You might want to consider the 90512 adapter which is new this year. It goes from 1-1/4 12 thread to Breech lock and has the breech lock to 7/8-14 thread adapter included with it. The only down side is that the 1-1/4 12 thread part is plastic. The price from Lee is $10 plus shipping.
I had my right eye done about 2 years ago. When I asked the doctor about the implant for astigmatism he said that the numbers just weren't there so I got the simple correction. The surgery got rid of all of the spherical correction for distance and about half of the astigmatism correction. There...
Another thing to try is to make a 1/16-5/64 inch diopter in a thin piece of metal. Tape it to your shooting glasses and see if the small aperture gives you enough additional depth of field to let you see the front sight.
If you look at the complete schedule for the shooting sports you will find plenty of events for powder guns. These include trap, skeet, prone rifle, 3 position rifle, pistol and rapid fire pistol. Most of these are fired "International Style" rather than the bullseye style that we in the U.S...

I use the Lyman Revolution for cleaning. I have two others, both home made, that worked well but that are used for storing cleaning equipment since I got the Lyman. It would work for mounting scopes but I wouldn't want to use it for anything where I was applying any pressure to whatever I was...
IIRC the Model 52 thumb safety is strictly within the slide. When you apply the safety part of the through rod rolls down and keeps the hammer from hitting the firing pin. This is what allows you to dry fire it without damage. As such, it should not affect the weight of the trigger pull.
The...
If I am using an oil as I reassemble the gun I use a heavy oil so it will stay where I put it. Once it is together, I use a light (no heavier that 20 weight) oil so it will wick into the areas that need lubrication. All of my shooting anymore is at indoor ranges or outdoor ranges during the...
With some pistols such as the 1858 Remington and reproductions of it have notches between the cylinder holes. This allows the hammer to rest in the notches thereby immobilizing the cylinder until the hammer is cocked. In this position the hammer cannot hit a cap because it is not lined up with...
"I went there to shoot with a guy from work and a guy was down range and I went to put my scope turrets back on the top of my scope and pick up my bench and one of the guys in charge started yelling at me don't touch the gun, don't I know the rules, etc. he was being a real a-hole."
At both...
This is the NRA rulebook for their International type matches. It gives information on all of the different types of matches that are a part of international shooting. Ask the club that is putting on the matches which ones they are shooting. For instance there is an international sectional in...
Since you are in Austin, talk to the folks at the Texas State Rifle and Pistol Assn. to find clubs near you. They may have leagues that you can join. For example there are two clubs near me. Both run a 20 week league in the winter and one has a summer league. These leagues shoot at 50 feet for...
I agree with all the suggestions to use standard velocity ammunition. Yours was manufactured back in 1972 and, at that time, they were considered more reliable than the 41s. They were not at all finicky about the ammunition they liked. Of course, some were more accurate than others but the High...
My procedure for zeroing a scale is just a little different that what you have done. I start with a level shelf as you did, then I use the leveling wheel on the left end of the base and paper shims under one of the feet on the right end to get the base of the scale level in both directions. Now...
It should be noted that the SAAMI standard references the 1996 NFPA recommendations. The current reccomendations are dated 2013 and there have been changes from the 1996 edition.
There was a thread several years ago on this subject and one poster signed onto the NFPA website and accessed...
I liberated an old spice jar from the kitchen. Fill about halfway with water, add a dash of
Dawn and top off with kerosene. Shake well before using. Wet the mop, dip it in the solution and swish it around, take it out, massage the solution into the mop, rinse and repeat. The combination of...
