All this talk about scopes, unless you are shoot further than 100 yards why put a scope on a lever gun. Shooting deer with iron sights will be no problem. If your targets are small then OK. But a lever gun is a think of beauty as is, no scopes for me. I have "old" eyes and can shoot...
For 100 yards I stick with iron sights or a red dot. At most a 2x to 5x mag. Why? Unless you are shooting Pdogs, at 100 yards a human or deer sized object is (sorry) an easy target and you now have a great field of view for other targets.
Nikon makes a great scope but I'm liking Burris at the moment. As for power, try 14x to 16x with an objective (the front end) that is large (collects light) but in the range you can afford. Just remember that the more mag you use the more you have to keep the scope steady. Shootong from the...
No mag inserted but filled and right above the rifle, bolt not locked back. So, yes, I'd half to insert mag, pull back on charging handle. Maybe I'll consider the bolt loack back.
At rifle velocities do you really need a bullet in .45 caliber to out someone down fast? Certainly a .30 cal would be adequate. That said, I think the 6.5 Grendel® is fine.
How about a Remington 700 in .270? If you handload you can make varmint loads (115 grain bullets) to deer and larger beasties with 130, 150 grain. Also a very common cartridge so you'll be able to buy ammo almost anywhere.
My comments are of no help to you but here is another advantage toa rifle that shoots pistol cartridges (Lever guns), I can reload with .357 Gold Dots, .41 and .44 Gold Dots.
I'd think a 9mm would get a hog's attention but I'd rather bring the .357. I'd go with 158 grain with a good velocity if you handload. And, yes, no SD type loads.
Not interested in an AR for match use. It's a battle rifle, that's why I have two, one for me and one for the boy. They shoot fine from bipods, kneeling, prone, whatever. I don't shoot match bullets either. But that's just me :D
Electronics can do freaky things, if you zero it with the door closed does it still jump around when the door opens and closes? I'm on my second one, the first developed a keypad problem. RCBS replaced it with no arguments.
There can be some variability in the 0.1 grain, I don't do hot loads...
Having seveal 700s in various calibers I can say, with confidence, that you should get 1 MOA or just sub MOA groups if:
- you find the right commerical ammo (168 grainers would be a good start)
- keep barrel clean
- work up your own handloads
Scope magnification depends on what you plan...
Been to Caswells and they have handguns for rent but you have to buy their ammo. You also have to buy their targets. All in all, worth the money when it's 115F outside... :D
I kind of like the .338 Spectre, http://www.teppojutsu.com/338.htm
Seems more like a pistol round rather than an intermediate between the 5.56 and the 7.62. I could be wrong at first reading....
Start by shooting in single action and concentrate on the sight picture, also use 38 specials. Don't adjust the sights for the 38 SP because the .357 mags will have a different point of impact but you'll be less likely to develop a flinch (if you're susceptible) using the 38 SP. After that...
