Stupidity Strikes Again, and One's Gotta Go.

I go with what many other have said, if something's gotta go then keep the functioning rifle with plenty of ammo and ditch the 'part'. Essentially you can use the mauser for the cost of cleaning it (patches, solvent etc.) whereas the AR 'part' is a 'project' and not a cheap one at that.

why is this so hard to find?

Well, actually the venerable .30-06 and .270 Win are pretty much 1 and 2 in overall sales. Since the 'volume' places rely on 'economy of scale' as their advantage, it's not surprizing that they focus on the higher volume (in terms of sales) calibers. Having said that, .308 is also one of the...

Recently got a 7mm magnum rifle

I would also 'normally' assume that someone means a Remington Magnum when they say 7mm Mag. However, as you've noted, he also said 'Winchester' in such a way that I'm not clear if he's referring to the rifle manufacturer or the fact that it's a WSM cartridge. In fact, I don't have much use...

Recently got a 7mm magnum rifle

I guess I'm the only one who (still) doesn't know which cartridge this guy's new rifle is chambered in. I'm thinking there's a pretty huge difference between a 7mm WSM and a 7mm STW.

    One Caliber Fits All

Since this is the "Rifle Country" folder, I'll stick with a centrefire rifle suggestion - with my cartridge of choice for 'rabbit to deer' being .250 Savage.

    6.5x55 or 257 Roberts?

I would also agree that the .257 might be a bit closer to what you've said you want, since you're specifically looking at the lighter weight bullets. However, there's not a big difference and if the 6.5x55 would save you time and money, that makes a lot of sense too. I will just add that the...

Recently got a 7mm magnum rifle

I'm not quite clear on which cartridge you're referring to here (although I seem to be the only one). Is this a 7mm WSM? I.e. by 'a Wincheste 7mm magnum' do you mean it's the WSM? Or is it a Winchester rifle (e.g. Model 70) chambered in a 7mm magnum cartridge, such as 7mm Remington Magnum?

    Tell me about Recoil.

Actually the the cartridge has a great deal to do with recoil. Recoil depends on the bullet weight, muzzle velocity and powder charge, as well as the rifle weight. Essentially the same rifle (e.g. Ruger M77II) can be had in .223 or .338 Win Mag. There will be a huge difference in recoil...

    Tell me about Recoil.

Yes, those other 'forces' act to reduce the velocity of the bullet, and therefore the recoil. Also there are forces operating in all directions, however, the only directions that allow motion (hopefully!) are in the direction of the bullet and the reaction in the opposite direction to that of...

    How many calibers?

The only 'problems' going with a rimfire other than .22LR are that it will be more expensive to shoot and many places make a distinction between 'rimfire' and 'centrefire', so the fact that you have a 'more powerful' rimfire doesn't help if you have to use centrefire. Having a .22LR and a .300...

    Tell me about Recoil.

"Tell me about Recoil." It all starts with Newton's old "equal and opposite reaction" law of motion. The bullet is propelled out of the barrel at high velocity. Recoil is simply the 'equal and opposite reaction' to the motion of the bullet. Of course, the rifle is much more massive than the...

    How many calibers?

You should probably have a .22LR for the small stuff, as well as some inexpensive target practice. You should be able to cover the rest with 2 centrefire cartridges. Before you select those 2 cartridges, you should be aware of how powerful a cartridge you feel comfortable shooting. Also note...

Inaccurate Ruger M77 (the original one) 7mm Mauser

As has been mentioned, start with the 'easy' (and cheap!) stuff first, before you get into gunsmithing. One question, how long did you wait between shots? With a 'lighter weight' hunting rifle weight barrel, it can heat up after a couple shots and change the PoI. Some rifles seem to just not...

    My Daughter wants a rifle

Everyone 'needs' a 10/22 at some point. Easy enough to switch the stock to an aftermarket to fit if necessary.

    My 10/22 build....

Gotta love that target with the 'bug juice' splashed on it. Gives new meaning to the term 'flier' when target shooting. ;)
