Derringers - Any practical value or just a range toy?

I'll agree re: the Bond Arms models, but I have an old American Derringer .45ACP with an alloy frame that only weighs about 10 oz. More compact than any Bond Arms I've seen, and MUCH lighter. Also kicks like a Missouri mule on steroids. Definitely agree any derringer is a llast choice firearm...

    Opinel?

I have a couple of old Cold Steel Twistmasters that were basically Opinels with checkered synthetic handle material rather than wood. The blades are Carbon V steel; thin, wide and razor-sharp. One is my go-to knife for dressing out deer, and the other is NIB, in case I ever lose or wear out my...

Which would you carry between a 357, 5 shot snubby, or a 9mm single stack 7 round pistol

While the odds of a well-maintained, quality semiauto failing are quite low, so are the odds of my needing more than 5 rounds in a defensive encounter. The odds of a well-maintained, quality revolver failing are infinitesimal. If you can handle .357s in a snubbie, they offer better stopping...

    That was fast! Thanks again.

Question re: Plug for S&W Revolvers

I recall someone once made & sold a plug to fill the hole in the frame of ILS-equipped S&Ws, should the owner decide to remove the lock. Does anyone know of a current source for such a plug? I was given a newer M629, and would like to "fix" the "manufacturing defect." Thanks for any and all help!

    Revisiting the Sp101

While others (like me) dress for comfort. Comfort for me includes a serious defensive sidearm rather than a talisman. I can pocket carry my SP101 in any clothes from jeans to slacks to cargo shorts, with no problem. In the mid-2oth century, real men pocket-carried truly impressive revolvers...

    Ruger SP101 info requests

I went full circle. When I purchased my DAO SP101 snubbie (several years ago), I found that firing factory .357s with the factory grip resulted in the weapon consistently cutting the joint of my trigger finger. I tried a (now discontinued) Uncle Mike's rubber grip, but it was no improvement. I...

    Revisiting the Sp101

I'm in the minority that does not find the SP1012 too heavy to pocket carry. I cobbled up a leather pocket holster with well-slicked edges that distribute the weight along the bottom of my pocket, and have carried it for about 7 or 8 years, constantly. Mine is the 2.25" DAO version. It's the...

Ruger cast vs. Smith & Wesson forged.

On another tack, I've carried both S&W stainless snubs (original "no-dash" M60 and 642-1) and a couple of Ruger SP101s concealed. In Dixie, "concealed" in the summer equals "sweat-covered." I've discolored/stained both S&Ws, but neither SP101 has discolored or stained, although my lifestyle...

Soldiers carrying civilian weapons as secondary armament.

My Dad was in the Artillery in WWII, in Europe. He was issued an M1 carbine, but no sidearm. While passing through France, he encountered a resident with a pistol and some ammo, but no cigarettes, and a deal was reached. Dad said he just flat out was not wandering around a combat zone without a...

    likelihood of defects in a brand-new S&W?

"Does S&W take back a revolver in this condition? Is it fixable? If fixable, is it really 100% after being fixed?" Yes, S&W will accept and corect the "problem children," and they are usually much better upon their return to the shop. I'm just sad that S&W allows product out of the door that...

    likelihood of defects in a brand-new S&W?

As the old geezer ... er ... veteran revolver shooter at my shop, I check out all the new wheelguns after they arrive. Regrettably, I must confirm having found an increasing number of S&Ws with completely unacceptable actions. It's not unusual to have an OK trigger pull on most chambers...

Gun lovers leaving Smith & Wesson for dead?

I also own several older (pre-ILS) S&Ws; zero with the lock. When in the holster or in the hand, I can't see the lock, either. That doesn't mean that, should I drop the revolver or should something strike it at the right angle, the ILS won't spontaneously engage. I favor revolvers over...

    Speed Six Bicentennial

Good luck accompanied you, sir! I still have a 6-inch Bicentennial Security Six that I purchased brand new in (you guessed it) 1976. I even used it to "test the water" in PPC competition, as a young cop. It performed pretty well, but was supplanted by a customized PPC revolver (S&W K-frame...

    Bobbing Hammer Spur

S&W and Ruger DAs have never suffered any reliability issues when their hammer spurs were ground off, in my experience. I have seen some Colt D frames (Cobras, specifically) that did suffer light primer strikes after this "surgery." Just my own experience.

A day in a gun shop.

I've been an active shooter and hunter for more than 50 years. I have a pretty good library of reference materials on firearms, history, etc., and try to keep abreast of new developments in the field. I recently retired from the corporate meatgrinder, and began part-time work at the LGS...

    Ruger American Rimfire

I bought a Ruger American Rimfire a couple of months ago, but work and weather prevented my getting it to the range until yesterday. I'm not a competitive rifle shooter (do some competitive pistol shooting, though). For perspective, the RAR was purchased because I finally had to retire my...

    Hawes 44 Magnum

Many years ago, I picked up a Hawes "Federal Marshal" in .44 mag. It came with brass backstrap & trigger guard and one-piece style walnut grips, and looks a lot like the one pictured by Bob Wright (although I realize the shape of the '51 frame is different). As it was certainly imported prior to...

    .38 +P snubby vs. Pocket .380 and 9mm pistols

I don't think there's a lot of difference between .38 snubs and 9mm pocket pistols, power-wise. The deciding factor for me has been the lesser reliability of pocket pistols as opposed to snub revolvers. Some have reported 100% reliability with their pocket autos, but I've seen several...
