Shooting a .22 Rifle Good Practice for Shotgun?

I have 2 answers to your question, depending on how I take it. If a person is new to shotgun sports and has a background in rifles, then yes, experience with a .22 would be helpful. It establishes the basics of long gun handling; gets the person used to holding something like a shotgun. This...

    Clays and magazine capacity

Thanks for the input. I'm not worried about hunting laws, since I don't hunt. My only need for the extra round might be for the off chance that I'll have 4 clays to shoot at. Again, I'm still slightly new to the sport and don't know of any games, formal or informal, that there might be. My main...

    Clays and magazine capacity

So, I got myself a brand new Beretta 391 Urika Sporting, and in the manual it mentions that from the factory it is limited to 2+1 instead of it's normal maximum of 3+1. I'm only going to be shooting clay sports with this shotgun, so would the 4th round ever be useful? For that matter, will I...

    Felt recoil questions

As weight goes, I want to say that the shotgun was an appropriate weight; or at least it wasn't particularly light. Among the shotguns I've been looking at, I've seen the Browning 525 Field in a 28" barrel. The price isn't too bad among O/U's, and the weight is listed at 7lbs, 14 oz. Other...

    Felt recoil questions

I would say that I typically keep it more in my chest, but that the gun may wander further out on my arm. I have mis-mounted my shotgun after looking for a target and bruised my arm, but I just chalk that up to poor technique that I need to overcome. It's possible that I've done that to a lesser...

    Felt recoil questions

So, I've gotten a few lessons in Sporting Clays and Skeet and find myself loving it, so now I'm lining myself up for a shotgun to buy. I do have a question about how people do with recoil in shotguns. I've been taught in 12ga. and shot a 20ga O/U a few times now and after 50-100 rounds my...

Shooters!... Wear Eye protection... My Lesson learned the HARD way!

I use some dorky-looking safety glasses that I used when I worked at a machine shop. Not the greatest looking, but they have good coverage and are built heavy duty. I do have some Oakley M-frames though, and I would feel safe wearing those too, although I don't like wearing sunglasses to the...

    Caliber effectiveness

Well, what happens when that guy goes to hide and go for a hand grenade to use against you? I'm afraid my combat experience only involves computer games, but if the guy ducks out of the way after you shoot, he may be going for grenades or to call reinforcements. I'd say if you'll only get one...

Andy Rooney Our Soldiers Aren't Heroes

He may have been a bit out of line, but in all fairness, the thought of joining the military just for the job almost happened to me. My primary response to him would be to ask about all the people that enlisted after 9/11/01. Many didn't join for any other reason than to find and kill...

How many of you do not have at least a case of ammo for most of your firearms?

I tend to purchase ammo by the case when I'm low, so I tend to have anywhere between 0-1000 rounds at a time.

    Steel "gong" targets

I couldn't tell you what alloy exactly would help, but I have good references on strength of materials. If anyone wants to put up some numbers on how much stress to withstand, I can pick out the alloy to fit it.

Tax returns: new gun or savings for house?

Well, you own a gun, but you don't own a house, so I'd go with saving for the house. If you have to ask about this, then it's probably best to be conservative and save.

Disadvantages to lead round nosed ammo?

If it's for a revolver, then I wouldn't sweat it. For an autoloader, I suppose it depends on what you're shooting. My instruction manual for my USP says no lead and I've heard some bad stuff about lead in polygonal rifling. I don't remember what the argument was about it though. I just take the...

    DAWN OF THE DEAD--SPOILERS!!!

I didn't mind the whole running zombies thing. When I first heard from a friend that the zombies moved like that, I was worried. I thought that maybe they were suddenly enhanced by being a zombie and that's why they did that. In the movie, they're just running because that's the fastest way to...

It seems snipers now use 9mm handguns to take their shots...

Look out, the gun grabbers are rounding us up in the "sniper gun" group. I mean look, it's a 9mm, you know how much larger that is than the 5.56 or 7.62mm rounds, and they come in a semi automatic, concealable weapon! Not only that, but the bullet can be lethal out to several hundred yards!

    DAWN OF THE DEAD--SPOILERS!!!

Ok, I know zombies aren't real and I don't worry about what goes bump in the night, but after seeing this movie (and I thought it was pretty good), I feel slightly safer knowing that I have my .45 and a couple hundred rounds stowed away. Kinda like thinking, "I know zombies aren't real, but if...

Carrying a maglite for self defense

I'm not really afraid for my life where I park, and I'm not really a small guy either, but I would think that carrying a club-like flashlight would be a small precaution for what could happen. I doubt I could get a CCW in Los Angeles, and even with one I couldn't carry it on any public school...

Carrying a maglite for self defense

I'm curious as to anyone's opinions on carrying a 2D maglite in a back pocket for self defense from a legal standpoint. I only ask this because on occasion at school I've had to park off-campus due to a full parking lot, and I'll carry this until I get on campus. Once there I can just toss it in...

how do I store a home defense gun?

Just curious how others approach this. If you keep a loaded gun in the house to protect against intruders, what do you do with it in anticipation of someone breaking in when you aren't home? I mean, if it's just in your drawer by your bed or something, it's going to get stolen. Do you lock it up...

    quietest pistol round

I'd just go with something in .22LR. Sure the short or something else might be quieter, but this is so common, why bother with anything else? I'd say that .22LR is quiet enough.
