    Critique My Editorial

I might add a bit about concealed handgun permits and the like. Stress that people getting them are checked out by the police and can generally be assumed to be 'good guys'. Use packing.org as starter material. Good luck, EM

    Felon owns house and

An odd question about this case. What was the law at the time the father committed the felony? Was he barred from firearms ownership at the time. 45 years ago takes it pre-1968. That just might make things ex-post-facto or grandfathered in his case. Cheers, ErikM

    If you founded a country...

Hmm. How about outlawing voting districts below the state level? Another item: All laws and regulations shall have a sunset term of no more than ((term limit)*(electoral period))+2 years. Laws cannot be simply re-enacted. Every law needs to be reviewed from time to time. And not by the...

    Mythbusters movie myths

I really liked the 'suck people out of depressurizing aircraft' tests they've done. That segment should be required watching for quite a lot of people. Bottom line: yes, you can create a hole large enough to suck a passenger through out of the aircraft, but you need explosives to do it. :neener...

    Traveling with Ammunition in Europe

The most probable causes are Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport) and KLM. KLM is the dutch flag carrier airline; Schiphol is its home base. I'd imagine the luggage coming off the NW Air flight was broken up and transit luggage ended up with the other luggage bound for the (in this case) KLM flight...

Two self-propelled guns vs. a tank

The norwegian navy apparently equipped one of their (swedish) Combat Boat 90s with a hellfire launcher by way of test. That is a 14 meter boat, which should be small enough to count :) I'd like to see someone trying to mount an Artillery Gun Module on a ship. If it works the results could be...

Arizona: Pilot program may track schoolkids with RFID bracelets

I'm totally against something like this for several good reasons. One reason is that it's one (not so small) item in a long line of measures that are turning schools into minimum security prisons. Then there's the point of 'mission creep'. It will probably take some :cuss: administrator...

Which country more libertarian? Britian legalizes "small brothels"

I support it for this reason and many others. One of those is that it makes it easier for police to go after people trafficers. Many trafficed women end up as forced prostitutes. Legalizing prostitution allows things like having the police call girls to hotel rooms for a recorded (and paid for)...

Miami Police plan sudden show of force ID checks...

I wonder what the goons would make of an international driver's license. Or for that matter, what they'd make of my perfectly legal EU-pattern dutch driver's license. It's a folded paper about 10x15 cm. "My passport? That's in the hotel safe. I wouldn't want to lose it officer." Cheers...

    Serenity movie

Something which I'll most certainly echo. To me, Blake's 7 brings back good memories. I'm one of the not-too-many forum members here who saw the first BBC broadcasts. True. It was an english series of the time in the sense that the producers did a lot with little money, but still put together...

Yuma sheriff gets armored car to patrol border

6 wheeled, british and secondhand? I wonder if someone laid their hands on a surplus Saracen and decided it might make a cool police APC (or rolling oven). If someone takes one trundling around Arizona, I hope for his sake that he installs an extra air conditioning unit...

Firms with Bush ties snag Katrina deals

Halliburton and KB&R are hardly the only big companies trying to get contracts to clean up and restore infrastructure. Smit Internationale (or their Smit Tak division) are contracting to recover shipping and oil rigs. For all I know they are also trying to contract for restoring harbors and...

Secret Service Mum on Bush Threat

Hmm... I could, maybe even should, take a humorous view on this. [throat clearing sound deleted] Somehow though I don't see much chance of something like this becoming law or even being proposed :D Actually in Bush's case, knowing that he might end up being punched in the nose by Arnold...

"Rebuild New Orleans - without the poor"

What the city fathers and urban planners should be more concerned with is the (tens of) thousands of middle class people and footloose (not location dependent) businesses moving away. As is you'll probably see entire neighborhoods being bulldozed anyway, but I agree there should be compensation...

    Jtf Katrina/uss Bataan

VMI: Good luck and keep up the good work! I kind of wonder if it was some of you Super Stallions that were seen by Interdictor Link: http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/44498.html In a somewhat relevant aside, my country (the Netherlands) has decided to offer (and send) help...

    DUKW's

IIRC the DUKW was a pretty much a standard (1942) 2.5 ton truck in a boat-shaped hull. Interesting, but seriously obsolete these days. A more modern vehicle, though also one that's also getting seriously obsolete, is the Alvis Stalwart, a 5 ton 6x6 fully amphibious truck. It even looks cool! :D...

    Nola

There's one other thing that NOLA might become an involuntary lab for: large scale urban toxic sludge cleanup. Of course, this depends on how big the oil industry/refinery damage is. Cheers, ErikM

    Nola

Well, I kind of support the idea of only getting full FEMA rebuilding aid once per location if you don't have the right insurance. If you're wiped out and rebuild onsite, you should rebuild properly, so the building is safe (or safer) from disaster. In the case of flooding, there are some...

    Eminent Domain Awareness: A Proposal

Flyboy, How about an A2 or maybe A1 sized poster of a door section with a notice tacked to it? The notice would be more or less like the one you proposed: The 'purpose' would be indicated with a large red checkmark. A footer would give the extra explanation and URL. Be sure to give the...
