Can a bad trigger help you be a better shooter?

Well, yes... sort of. Your description of greater focus and attention to improve your technique with a less than ideal trigger has merit. However, I wouldn't say that a great trigger will hurt your marksmanship. We should be practicing the fundamentals you describe all the time with any firearm.

    Muzzle crowning.

Maybe so, but even a "good" barrel will need recrowning sooner or later. Often sooner, like right out of the box... if you're serious about a good crown. This is would be a good point in the thread to read the OP's original question. The crux of the matter is what type of crown people prefer...

Ruger Mini Thirty. On the fence.

Nope, before the pandemic panicked everyone, the price of a Mini-30 was well within reasonable... perfectly inline with inflation. I can't help you. At this point you'd have to pay me as a private tutor. But let's not. Too much work for a volunteer forum. Have you considered you might be...

    Muzzle crowning.

Yes, the exact one. The crown is simply ghastly.

Ruger Mini Thirty. On the fence.

Careful, you're not looking past the end of your nose, and your doing it in front of God and everybody... a permanent record. Well, that is as long as this forum exists, and/or as long as the Internet Archive Wayback Machine exists. Prices and availability of guns and ammo have gone up and...

    7.62x39 v. 7.62x51 short range wounding differences

And just like that, this thread goes off the rails on a crazy train. So I think it's time to remind the members what the OP's question was. Balrog said: "My question is, at ranges less than 150 yards, how much difference would there be in wounding characteristics against human adversaries for...

One More Sixgun! Colt Detective Special.

Several years ago my old girlfriend had one like the OPs as a nightstand gun. Her dad gave it to her. Nice shooter! Well, my girlfriend wasn't old then. She's not old now. I guess I should have said former girlfriend.

    7.62x39 v. 7.62x51 short range wounding differences

Yes, that is correct. The Vympel plant is in Amursk, and Amursk is in Russia. It's easier for me to cut to the chase and use the term "Vympel" when referring to the plant.

    Muzzle crowning.

A good crown will help nearly any rifle. And that's because inexpensive bargain rifles don't have a good crown from the factory. There are a lot of measures one can take to make a mediocre rifle into a good shooter... life by a thousand cuts, if you will. But the question was about crowning.

    A spare reload if needed

I normally carry 15+1 in my S&W, and a spare 15-rnd mag. In this day and age we can't possibly anticipate every scenario. It's no burden to carry an extra mag. The worst cases have already happened to many people. Mostly situations where there was no good guy with a gun was there to stop the...

310 yards, Ruger American Ranch 6.5 grendel

Hey, great shooting! Ruger's American Ranch is pure delight in any caliber. Some kind of magic. I've seen most of the action with them chambered in 7.62x39, but I really like 6.5 Grendel. Very nice.

    Muzzle crowning.

I cut my Mini-30 barrel down a bit from 18.5" to exactly 18". I Then rented a couple tools, including a facing tool and an 11º crowning tool from 4D Reamer Rentals. It turned out really well and it did improve performance. I could have used a 45º or something else, as long as it's done...

    Rem Oil Use.

I've used Rem Oil for so long, the metal cans it used to come in have changed to plastic bottle. I still have an old metal squirt can about the size of 3-in-one oil. And I still have a clear plastic 1 oz bottle with a syringe on top to get into tight places. I use a few other oils, but Rem...

    7.62x39 v. 7.62x51 short range wounding differences

I think at this point, accidentally or on purpose, several of us have thoroughly answered the OP's question in terms most people can understand.

    7.62x39 v. 7.62x51 short range wounding differences

Yeah, no meaningful difference even out to 200 yards. If a whitetail, hog, or a two legged varmint is DRT after being hit with a good bullet in x39, it can't be any more incapacitated than dead. And 7.62x39 is not inherently inaccurate, or less accurate than 7.62x51. It depends on the brand...

Ruger Mini Thirty. On the fence.

I was just kidding about not weighing in again unless the OP returns. Just wanted to get your hopes up... you know, send a shock through the thread and try to reset it. On a serious note, if you come across a Mini-30 that shoots that bad, send it back to Ruger for service... if you're sure...

Ruger Mini Thirty. On the fence.

I didn't buy a Mini-30 in 1989 because I couldn't afford an AR. I wouldn't have kept my Mini-30 all these years (35 years) if it was a poor performer. It doesn't sit in my gun safe. It's one of my favorite guns to shoot. Here's a helpful tip to help make these discussions potentially more...

Ruger Mini Thirty. On the fence.

The Mini-30 is a great little carbine. I've had mine for over 30 years. I've had trigger work done, reduced gas bushing, which are very popular mods. It sports the original wood stock. My Mini-30 shoots under 2-inch groups @100 yards on the worst days with the cheapest ammo. On my best days...
