Do BP substitutes have a shelf life?

Look at the MSDS for the particular powder.

Q on seating wads in revolvers

In my opinion the wads are not required for normal shooting. Crisco works fine as do any of the Lanolin lubes.

    Another BP comparison

Pulp; Sounds like your powder is OK, just not dense enough. Wet screened powder probably has a density of about 1.2 give or take. Wet pressing will give a much higher density. I press mine at 3,000 psi and get 1.7 density. Charcoal is perhaps 90% of the whole process. Over cooking is a...

    Another BP comparison

Could just be a density thing. Do you compress the powder or just wet screen it?

    Impact sensitivity of BP

It may be possible to get an impact detonation but not very probable. All explosives are subjected to various testing to determine the specific qualities of each compound or mixture. The impact test is one of those used. Another is the rifle bullet test conducted with a standard military .30 cal...

    Got "made" Friday.....

Interesting question. I've always carried an auto but I just loaded up a sixgun and shook it. It does clink a bit.

Should I buy that bullet mould?

Katigroszek Pascalp is correct, that mould will be too large. One thought for all you folks outside the US is Dixie Gun Works. They are on the web at www.dixiegunworks.com They will ship outside the US and following is a quote from the catalog. "Maximum length for parcel post...

How much play between a revolver's barrel and cylinder is acceptable?

"How much play between a revolver's barrel and cylinder is acceptable?" Assuming you do the other checks as suggested and all is well, get out your feeler gauges. On the Colt type guns I look for something around .008 inch. Some folks with expensive modern sixguns might think that much gap...

    Basic BP Troubleshooting

My experience with C&B revolvers only goes back 50 years so with that limitation I'll make a few comments. Generally speaking there should not be any big surprises. The technology goes back 150 years or more. One chronic concern with a lot of the clones is the loading port. This is the...

Wanting to start playing on the BP field

Perhaps the best advice for a new BP shooter is "don't go cheap". The best revolvers are probably Uberti (imported under many names). The Ruger Old Army, although no longer made, can still be found. Of the Colt clones the choices are many, particularly in the .44 calibers. For a good, basic...

Anyone been to the Waikiki gun shop and indoor range?

Boy what a shocker back in '63 when I moved from Nevada to Hawaii. Gun laws, what are gun laws  It was less than two weeks when I got my first free ride to HPD. After several hours of playing "Stupid Haole from mainland", the cops let me go sans gun. After considerable negotiation I...

    Making blackpowder.

Well Pulp, sounds like you got the mix down pretty well. You are right about the charcoal, it takes a lot of it to make the 15 percent. Keep practicing with the charcoal making, it'll get easier as you tweak the process. My little tin can kiln holds ten pounds of wood and yields two pounds...

Can a static spark set off black powder?

There are some qualifiers to the question. The posted test with electrical current demonstrates that the normal electron flow will follow the exterior glazing of graphite. Other testing performed over the years using a Van de Graff generator has produced different results. Investigations of...

    Making blackpowder.

Lets see now, screens. Walmart, two three drawer plastic stack boxes. Junk store, frying pan splatter guards, several mesh sizes. Back to Walmart craft dept. Plastic mesh used for embroidery, comes in diferent mesh sizes. Cut the bottoms out of all but one drawer and cut the tops out of the...

    Making blackpowder.

Scalper; I made some dippers (3 each) from PVC pipe and cut them just shy of the proper weight and then top off with the scale. The charcoal is a bit difficult due to the way it settles and or has some small chunks. The Nitrate and Sulphur (if I use Sulphur) work quite well. Redd

    Making blackpowder.

Hey Scrat; The scale I bought is a Pelouze model SP5 2.2 kg. I've had it for several years now and don't recollect the price. I'm sure they have gone up in price but it was a heck of a lot cheaper than a digital powder scale. Redd

    Making blackpowder.

I've always used metric weight. Office Depot has some good postal scales that are digital and work well.

    Made my first batch yesterday.

Just took a 500 gram batch off the mill and started another batch turning. I'll put 6 kg in the press today and then into the dryer. Most of this will be "cannon fodder" for the Summer cannon shoots. :D:D

    I give up

If anyone is interested, 49CFR covers Hazmat shipping. It's a DOT reg and Canada has just about a carbon copy as an MOT reg. All shippers must comply, even the military.
