THe High Road This just might be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. He obviously knows nothing about firearms. Comments like this are why I have 17 posts in 4 years.

red dot on a bolt action for deer?

Red dot on Remington 700 I had a Remington 700 in .243 that ran a red dot sight. It had the synthetic stock and 20 inch barrel. Very accurate and very fast. I got the idea from Clint Smith: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNG2w2TADus

    Rifle barrel length question

Check out this article about Tac Ops.... Cutting a .308 barrel down to 18 inches resulted in losing a whopping 32 fps. http://www.tacticaloperations.com/SWATbarrel/

looking for a new tactical rifle

When you use the words "good", "inexpensive" and "tactical", that means AK. Maybe an SKS, just make sure you have a lot of stripper clips !

Which companies make rifles for sniper/match purposes?

Zak Funny how we are saying the same thing ! Proper fit is a must, good solid optics are key, say a Leupold MK 4. Good thing I surfed your website, now I more stuff to research in the last month of my deployment ! Cheers Selden

Which companies make rifles for sniper/match purposes?

Zak I don't think a factory Remington with good glass would be a "budget" rifle. It would be a good starter rig with more than enough accuracy. Reading the wind, learning how to use a mil-dot reticle, and putting in a lot of trigger time are just as important as gear.

Which companies make rifles for sniper/match purposes?

Wow, a Sako TRG only costs about 3 grand ! A Remington 700 LTR with a Leupold will cost way less than that. A lot of people equate rifle accuracy with drag racing..........how fast you want to go is only limited to how much you want to spend. I disagree......You have to learn how to operate a...

Which companies make rifles for sniper/match purposes?

I would start with the .308, low recoil, great accuracy, and there is a lot of stuff out there for short action Remingtons. Keep in mind that most military and police sniper rifles are chambered for .308 too. You can learn a lot out of a Remington LTR, don't worry so much about caliber. By...

If I know nothing about rifles...

Jeff Cooper "Art of the Rifle" is a great book, it has a lot of info in a readable format. He talks mostly about marksmanship, shooting positions, trigger control, etc. He only talked about the Scout Rifle in the last chapter. Some folks would probably say the book isn't sexy enough, but the...

    243 vs 22-250

I had a Rem 700 in .243 with the barrel chopped to 20 inches. Shot 60 gr. Sierra HPs, and still got 3400 fps in the bubba barrel. About the same time I played with a NEF single shot in .22-250 that had a 26 inch barrel. For some reason I still preferred the .243, just cause it was handy, still...

Which companies make rifles for sniper/match purposes?

Go with a Remington 700 LTR or 700P, slap a leupold 3x9 on it,or a Super Sniper 10X, get 2 or 3 cases of 168 gr. match ammo, and thoroughly wring it out. By the time you shoot through a few thousand rounds, you''ll have a pretty good idea of what you like and don't like. Don't drop 3-5k on...

    Cutting a fluted barrel ?

TAM, I like your use of the term "bubba" the barrel ! I've cut down almost every rifle I've had, or gone with carbine versions ! All of my Remington bolt guns have been cut to 20 inches, and the only two that I left factory were an 18" Remington 7600, and a 26" .340 Weatherby ! I have...

    Cutting a fluted barrel ?

Don I didn't plan on keeping the factory barrel on it when I have it built up. Probably go with Shilen or Douglas, I haven't made my mind up ! I don't mind spending a little money before I send it off, and see how I like the feel of it, getting to play with it a little before I send it...
