good point Bartowski, two guns are wise for such disparate uses, 75 to 4-500 metres, but in my experience, in Northeast British Columbia, i have seen most of my animals at less than 200, but some beautiful (and wary) Trophys (sp?) at the end of large cutblocks, far away on Transmission Line...

the 30-06? My dad actually suggested the 30-06 this morning...it is a rightfully recognized classic, and with the 180's it should haved terminal performance....but i worry about the ability at the farther ranges....i have seen massive Bears and Moose at the 400-1000 ranges, but cant ethically...

Thank you all for your responses.... I thought that a heavy load with 308 would be ok for closer range work less than 300 Metres up to and including moose. But it is that long range potential that makes me question the 308, as good a cartridge as it is....and meat damage is decided by bullet...
