Kar 98k vs Lee Enfield No 4 MK 1

We have both, will take care of them for the next owner, hopefully well down the road. Our K98 is a little different being a ‘Norwegian surrender’. When the war was over, 100’s of thousands of K98’s stayed in Norway. In the early 50’s the military of Norway took a bunch & rebarreled them to...

lever action which caliber and manufacturer

I like Henry for new stuff, have one in 45-70. Sometimes I wonder who makes the rules with cartridges in previous shotgun zones. My Knight muzzle-loader has more fps and a flatter trajectory than most any 45-70 round. That’s a 45 cal, shooting a .400” bullet at 2218 fps, Blackhorn 209 powder...

    7.62x39 hunting ammo

The son wanted to use a 7.62x39 rifle a few years ago on a youth hunt. I reload most types but for this hunt I bought a box of the Hornady hunting ammo. One shot & the medium 8 was down inside 50 yards. Shot distance was also modest at this location, 50-60 yards max. This was also with iron...

Are you stuck in "no-rifle" deer country?

I deer hunt in IL a fair bit. I’ve tried the slug barrels, prefer my Knight muzzle-loader the vast majority of the time. I don’t mind a little fiddling with the setup. Once in the field, speed loaders are ready an easy reload. A few years ago I did a shoot-off, Knight M-L against the slug...

    Charter 41 Magnum?

I have a 4” Model 57 inbound to go with my others. I load about everything, have bookoo 41 Special cases too. I realize one can just use a regular case, but the price was right.

IL or WI Gunsmith recommendation for Rem M7 & M700?

Check if it’s also hard off the stock, eliminate the stock contributing. You don’t have base screws poking down, correct? My Model 7 has a Timber trigger, my Model 700 a Shilen trigger. If by Lomira, ask that shop in the center of town, he would know where to go, Bill’s Sporting Goods.

    Love it or List it...M77

My only Model 77 dates to 1970, a ‘flat-bolt’. It was at a shop on consignment, walked in 4+ months later it was still there, 284 Winchester. It came with ammo & spent brass.

    Is my ammo still good?

I just ‘reclaimed’ a fair amount of old military 308 ammo. This is 1980’s vintage, in an unheated garage. I went through & wiped with an oily rag. For the handful with rough areas on the case I used fine steel wool. Was this time consuming, yes. I looked at it as easier & quicker that...

    Gun cleaning, how often?

Are we out hunting in the rain or snow, or is this after a few rounds at the range on a sunny day? One of the worst things you can do is put a wet gun in a case & leave it. We’ll, besides that muzzle-loader after shooting black powder.

    Hunting Quail - Alone

I’ve hunted ducks, geese’s, grouse, & woodcock, solo, no dog. It’s no biggie, adjust as needed. Yes, shooting waterfowl over water usually had a boat or canoe. I’ve also been wet up past the waist. Upland game is easier, starts with walking through favorable cover.

    Gut Piles

When hunting limited size properties, we try to take the deer out whole, then field dress in an open field, away from the hunting stands. In an open field, the pile is gone very soon. In the ‘big woods’ or towards the last hunt of the season, anywhere is good.

Missed an opportunity on a big deer tonight. Possible scope issue?

‘Adjustable Objective’ out of focus/adjustment for the range?

    Bad season continues

I saw lots of deer on my 1st period IL hunt, largest were 8 pointers at 25 yards. This is sorta QDM property, typical 8 pointers get a pass. I’ll be going down for round 2, also have a few anterless tags.

    Flashlights and spooking game

I use a very dim, green light clipped to my vest or jacket. Of course it’s plenty bright when pitch black out. You may know the way, but don’t need a stick in the eye. In some locations I look at it as a safety measure, let’s others see you moving. I like to get to the deer spot at least...

    Sig 365 SAS

I just bought a ‘standard’ P365, with the external safety. I’m just waiting for the background check to clear, weekend & all. I’ve looked at them, Dunham’s had it in stock locally, $499.

I’d rather go Timney, yes I realize it costs more.

Bad day at the rifle range

One could start with an examination of his remaining ammo, then maybe his reloading bench and/or any notes. This one seems like a serious Kaboom, much more than just a little overcharge.
