I think you're right to go with the .38. That's what I carry when I hike. It's light enough you don't get tired of hauling it around and easy to carry in a back pocket holster.
I have one and it is fun to shoot. The gun just seems to be the right size for a .22. Mine doesn't shoot groups like those by PapaChuck, but that may be partly the gun and partly me.
I think it depends on how serious your plinkin' is. I have a 3" M317 and a 6" M17. I love the 317 and it's a hoot to shoot, but the M17 is a more accurate plinker, and the 17 (or the 617) seems a better bet for the "lifetime" requirement. If the "kit gun" factor is more important I'd lean...
I've had no problems with mine, 250 rds. pre-recall, 100 rds. post-recall, and have received compliments on the free recall hat. It's not fun to shoot like a Bersa 380. To me it has a bit more bite than the S&W 637.
Phoenix Arms HP-22A. Haven't gotten through 50 rounds in a session without a FTF, but compared to some of these stories that doesn't seem too bad. It's fun to shoot though, especially with the 5" barrel.
